Like jesus, its only in Madrid, its not like its in Korea or Thailand like previous years... I went as far as to contact CUSAI myself, and they said there are no university archers who had the relevant international experience. Right now in the intervarsities system we have two(three? did Maire captain?) and one vice-captain of the Junior Irish Team - I know for a fact that I, Sinead, Maire, and Bolger (at the very least, im just talking about people I have seen shoot this distance with my own eyes) can shoot 70m quite acceptably. I have shot 300@ 70m in competition (36 arrows) but CUSAI seems to think we need to be putting in 1200s before they will even consider it. I can understand their desire to not send people who will make muppets of themselves and spend their time hunting for arrows in the grass, but jesus, there are enough decent archers here who can put 36 arrows in a 70m butt and not miss. Whats more, were used to being independant, you should see the coaches, delegates and equipment people who accompany other sports - all we need is 4 seats on the plane(maybe 5 if we bring a manager). Speaking from experience there isnt anything like the experience of international competition - seeing top class archers up close can do wonders.

What I propose is to invite CUSAI to an event in say April or May - when we are all bowfit - and let them watch us shoot a 70m Olympic round. They seem to have it in their heads we are a bunch of muppets, we need to convince them otherwise.

    Opinions?

Sounds like a plan. I'm surprised at hearing the way they're acting. I think this would be a job for the new Intervarsity Committee. Which needs to be gotten back to being sorted.

Looked at the World University Games site a bit:
They have Summer Games on odd number years,
and World Champs Games on even number years.

Archery does be in the World Champ Games, and it was in the 2003 Summer Games and it might be in the summer games in 2005.
Archery is on in 2006 in Vinicne - Slovak Rep, 12th -18th June.

also looked at the results from 2003, the average scores were:72@70m
    Men: 628 ( ranged from 675 to 531, 9 out of 57 scores were below 600 )
    Ladies: 616 (ranged from 669 to 542, 9 out 45 scores were below 600 )

Also eligibility: Must be between at least 17 and less the 28 on 1st Jan of the year of the event.
Also must be a full time student, or have obtained a diploma/degree from a full time course in the year preceeding the event.

If we have one or two people shooting around 600, and a few close to it, 550-600, and if we go do ok at the British Champs thing next year, i'd say we could convince them to let us have a team. Eastern Europe isn't that far either.

just sent of an email to cusai.ie, telling them the final league results and giving them results and a little news story on our taking part in the British Champs, if we're lucky it might be put up the site, and at least it lets them know we're active and stuff.
