They've just annouced in their report on software piracy that "you need a licence to use a computer just as you need a licence to drive a car" :D

I didnt see the report, but on some levels its similar, you need a license to drive a car legally, much like you need a license to use Windows on your PC legally...

Was almost expecting the dim-witted one to say "Well I've got my ECDL, how about you?" at the end :p

What about poor people who cant afford MS prices on software they make millions every day

    (my software is lijit)

I'm not talking about software licenses... It sounded like it was implied in the report that you have to be licensed to actually sit in front of the thing and use it...

And if people can't afford the software, there are often plenty of viable alternatives if they just look... Unfortunatly the general populous seem to be aware of only one brand...

    Really? What about insurance?

(I know your statement was probably a joke, but I'm really desperate to start learning to drive I'd believe anything, and it's going to take me forever to get prov. licence and a fortune to get insurance :( ).

you don't need a licence to drive on private property - insurance only covers you if you hit something...so don't hit a tree or something in said field....also make sure you own the field, or the owner would be held responsible if you damage something (yourself)

though, the best way to learn to drive is via a driving school/lessons IMO...

    I overheard a conversation:

    girl1: I'm getting a PC from Dell
girl2: make sure it has microsoft, it's the best
girl1: no, I heard windows was better
    me:

Microsoft have been caught illegally forcing PC makers to pay a royalty for EVERY machine they sold. Nowadays almost all big brand name PC's have windows OEM bundled on them.

Does anyone have figures for numbers of PC's sold with windows Vs. no of successful windows refunds ?

Point being - the vast majority of machines have licences to run windows - with their fancy stickers etc.

Anyway the licence you need to drive a computer is called an ECDL D'Oh

BTW: head over to www.openoffice.org - 1.1.2 is out now

(you need a license to have a dog - but anyone can have a child - by which we can infer..)

I know I'm going to get a kicking for this, but for me the key word there is "girl"... I'm assuming they were secondary school types?

"you need a licence to use a computer just as you need a licence to drive a car"

that sentence is fine for the tv3 news target audience

It _should_ be required. There are too many morons out there.

Where I work all our new machines come from dell with our customised Windows 2000 pro build preinstalled. (We have a corporate volume licence for Win2k)
For some reason all the new machines come with shiny windows XP professional licence keys stuck to them.

That's because the license is NON-TRANSFERRABLE - which explains in part my insistance that most PC's out there already have a windows license.

    Amen!

Hmm, I wonder does having an ECDL make you less prone to crashes? :p

    Groan.

That was terrible. And stupid. Everybody knows nothing is going to stop you from crashing when using Windows.

Unless the Windows were made from perspex.

    Sorry.
    :D

What I was referring to was that for the vast majority of home users and their PCs, a (SW) license is required to use the PC.

That gives me an idea. A mandatory insurance requirement for all Microsoft software users. ;)

TV3 news can be a bit short on the clue factor at times. I remember them ringing a friend's workplace to ask for a comment on something at the last minute because they had missed the entire story and only found out about by watching RTE news.

Since most of the spam and viruses originate there they'd need third party too..
