I'm genetically pre-disposed to high cholesterol. My father had a heart bypass and my older brother takes medication to reduce his cholesterol.

From talking to my brother, apparently diet (unless you are only eating lard) will only drop your cholesterol part of the way, if you really want to reduce it radically, you are likely to need medication. Exercise will also help part of the distance.

Have a read over stuff on the web (but beware what you read on the web) and talk to your doctor.

There are certain margarines that help reduce it, we'll just stop it being continuously replaced/built up. They are low or have no fat of a certain kind, can't remember the term just now.

Anyway, porridge, it practically scrapes the chlosterol from the insides of your blood vessels. Some medication may help, my mums a pharmacist but generally goes for none medicinal methods for healing, and she swear by porridge for getting rid of chlosterol. Of course you may not like porridge, I didn't, but I quite like it now, with honey and a bit of maple syrup.

Yeah those margarines are bloody expensive. Nearly 7 euro for a tub of Flora pro-active or that Benecol stuff (which is rotten anyway)

It's a myth that eggs (boiled eggs anyway) affect your cholesterol. What will have signifigant effect, and this isn't publicized enough is the types of carbohydrates you eat. Sugar and refined flour will cause your cholesterol to rise signifigantly due to high levels of insulin production. Switch to wholewheat versions of foods like pasta/rice etc. if you simply must have them.

I was watching a program on telly where a nutritionist was called in to help a woman with high cholesterol and the first thing she did was empty the cupboard of choccy biccies and pasta etc. and replace them with loads of vegetables (your hearts best friend) and oily fish (your hearts other best friend).

    Leave the poor eggs alone:

The Inexpensive and Low-Calorie Source of Nutrients
    July 13, 2004

According to researchers from the University of Connecticut, eggs are an inexpensive and low calorie source of nutrients such as folate, riboflavin, selenium, choline and vitamins B12 and A. An excellent source of high-quality protein, eggs are also one of the few dietary sources of vitamins K and D.

The Journal of Nutrition reviewed the recent recommendation by the American Heart Association (AHA), which limits consumption of other animal foods if already eating one egg yolk per day. Contrary to popular belief, numerous studies fail to link dietary cholesterol and egg intake to the progression of coronary heart disease.

On the other hand, many other clinical studies show that eggs contribute to the prevention of chronic age-related conditions like coronary heart disease, loss of muscle mass, age-related macular degeneration, hearing loss and memory loss. So enjoy eggs as you see fit, they are one of nature’s truly completely nutritious foods.

Too little cholesterol can be as bad as too much ?

My Understanding of it [insert discalimer] is that your body makes cholesterol. It's similar to insulin in that too much or too little can be bad for you (I think). A small sub set of the population can't regulate their cholesterol properly and the EXTRA they take in in thier diet is not good. But because most people can regulate cholesterol properly when not on a pure grease diet not everyone needs to worry about thier intake.

I've heard it said that instead of spending money on advertising it might be better spent on giving the whole population the test and focusing attention on those at risk rather than make everyone worry about something that they probably don't need to worry about.

I've also heard it said that rats when not fed foods rich in sugar tend to eat a balanced diet but when presented with high sugar junk foods pigged out on the wrong stuff.

Again [insert disclaimer] I could be totally wrong - but if you are worried about cholesterol the general advice is see a Doctor to find out if your levels are OK.

The best way to lower cholesterol is to have a balanced diet nothing more really. Long grains and fibre good, fat and processed sugars bad. As for specific foods the mag is worth switching too I have along with Actimel fruit drink
    The principles of the diet

Reduce the amount of fat in the diet, especially from saturated fat, which mostly comes from animal sources, and from trans fat, which mostly comes from processed foods.

Use polyunsaturated, or even better, monounsaturated, fats in preference to saturated fat.

Eat something starchy with every meal, such as bread, potatoes, pasta, rice or cereals. These foods should form the basis of all meals.

Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Aim for five portions each day.

Aim for a diet high in fibre, particularly soluble types such as oats, pulses, lentils, fruit and vegetables.

Try to cut down on sugar and sugary food.

    Avoid an excessive alcohol intake.

Use less salt in cooking and avoid adding extra at the table.

Try to eat oily fish two to three times per week

I do all the above except the oily fish (unless tuna counts!) And my levels are good and my blood pressure which had crept up a few years back is good again (120/70 last week).

    Mike.
