Getting Java on Windows 2000

Seems like an inane question I know, but more troublesome then I thought it would be!

I have a fresh PC with not much on it and need to get on all the essential basics (any quality tangents welcome).

My question is this: In order to provide full Java functionality for Java based college courses and browsing what should I install and where can I get it?

http://java.sun.com obviously, but I just can't figure out what the best complete package to a fresh machine is from there, anyone got some succinct advice?
