Backing up Fr Ted 1st Series

    Hi,

I'm trying to backup my Fr Ted dvd collection. The Complete 1st Series is on 1 DVD coming in at 7.59GB. I use DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter to backup all my dvd's but using DVD Shrink for this Fr Ted disc, the compression setting is at a woefully high 53.4%. Is there any other way of backing this DVD up? That compression setting would probably make the DVD unwatchable. The main movie itself is 7.4 GB's. All 6 episodes are lumped into one. Any ideas?

DVD Rebuilder is your only man for that kinda compression level (unless you want to pay big bucks for several commercial programs and spend a few hours/days learning it all :p).

Check out its forum on www.doom9.org. When setting it up, please make sure you follow the instructions on the site, or you WILL have problems. If you need anything... or help, pm me.

That reminds me, i must 'back up' those €50 notes in back pocket at some stage, just in case I need to use twice at the same time.

Thanks. Read your post in another DVD thread but didn't want to hijack that thread. Will try DVD Rebuilder. Just wanted to see if there were any other suggestions.

Very helpful I must say. Picture this, you come back from the pub with a few mates and a few jars on ya. Hmm, what DVD will I watch. Fr Ted is always a good laugh. Go to get a beer from the fridge and Fr Ted is being used as a frisbee or just tossed on the floor scratched to bits. Ok, so not the best scenario but you get the point!

    gimme a min...

Right, here are TWO broken copies of "The Sims: Superstar". One of them somehow got scratched to bits and refuses to read, the other was accidently crushed by a chair leg, and has a huge crack running halfway from the inner ring to the outer ring.

There was a third copy somewhere, but i must have thrown that one away.

Thankfully the first thing i did when i got the game was make a copy of it, otherwise i'd have been fairly screwed the first time it broke, and had to get a second copy, and again the second time, and yet AGAIN a third time. (she's stopped playing the sims now, so the disc is safe )

I think that illustrates my point nicely.

    Step 1: Buy uber-cool game
Step 2: Insert CD/DVD in drive
Step 3: Cancel all autorun annoying-things
    Three paths from here ....
Step 4a: Grab ISO of disc
Step 5a: Mount ISO and use it as a normal CD/DVD
    Step 4b: Install software
Step 5b-1: Retrieve/Create no-cd crack for your legitimately bought software
Step 5b-2: Use software until vendor provides a patch that includes no-cd within it (ie, UT series :))
    Step 4c: Use CD/DVD normally
Step 6: Store original disc in safe place

While not telling people to crack software, as it is illegal to do so, I really dislike being FORCED to use a very very easy to damage/destroy piece of plastic every time I want to play my copy of the game.
I'll always argue this point, however I do see it from the vendor's point of view .. they want to stop piracy.
Fair enough I say - but will they give me a free copy of the game if I damage my CD/DVD? not a hope in hell :)

One of the best features of the UT series is the fact that the first update for the games usually include a no-cd crack by the actual company. :)

tbh 50% compression isnt that bad for a normal tv dvd. (by normal i mean theres no matrix style special effects) unless its shrek or some other animated or special effects riddled film you really wont notice pixilation. ive had to compress the odd one by around 65% and thats only slightly noticable(depending on the conditions above, if its something like ive said above then split it over 2 discs.) if you have power dvd 4 or above you can preview it once its on your hdd.

EA replaced my Need for speed underground disc when i accidentally cracked it, making it totally unreadable. Just emailed them and sent the broken disc back in an envelope and they sent out a replacement about a week later.

How do I split it over two discs? That would be ideal.

its quite complicated to split an existing disc on 2 discs, so read up on it on www.doom9.org first, then when you try it and get stuck, ask again.

Actually, they are VERY nice about getting replacements, so long as you send in the broken one first. however, its a helluva lot easier to just not break the disc to start off with, or to just break a CDR or DVDR...
