    Yo,

My new mac arrives, but it asks me to set the region of the DVD player every time.

which one of you guys can tell me how to set it to nothing? so that it plays all region dvds?
this would be a great help..

    thks
    a mac novice.

be VERY careful. if it keeps asking you to set a region it may be because you keep inserting different region dvds into the drive. it will only allow you to change the region so many times (5 or 6 i think) before it becomes locked on the last region you set it to.

your drive can't be made mutiregion without a hack. you can download programs that will hack your drive's firmware but i REALLY wouldn't recommend it. if it doesn't work your drive will be useless as will your warranty.

best way around this is to set the drive to the region of most of your dvds (r2 i assume). but then you won't be able to view other regions using Apple's Dvd player.

However you can use VLC player. i don't know how it works but it somehow finds away around your drive's region settings without modifying them. VLC can play any region dvd as well as most kinds of media files. you can get it at www.versiontracker.com. i'd highly recommend it. its a great program.

    nice one,

im also having problems watching films that my friend has given me...

they are avi's from a windows pc...
mac explorer doesnt recognise them, well it recognises the disc and its label but it cant see the files within!
any advice, as always, is welcome

hmmm. I'm not sure about this. VLC can play avi files. but if you can't even see the files on disk it may be a format issue. your friend's cd format may not be mac compatable. i assume he burnt the cd on his pc and gave it to you. are you sure the Finder is showing no files on the disk?

    yep yep
definitley, it shows the lael on the right hand side, under the hard drive, but when i double click it, it says no files and no space free...

format incompatibility would be the likliest solution i guess..it works fine on his pc..
i have to download the vlc file...
ill try a different avi and see what happens too...
