its actually 4.36gb that dvd single layers can store and 4.25 x 2 is 8.5 so its not really hard to see where 8.5gb comes from

Ehh u sure about that? All the media ive used was 4.7gb and ive put that ammount onto it.

The simple answer is that you don't fit can't fit the same amount of data on the second layer as you can on the first.

The technical answer can be googled.

No, you put 4.36gb on each disc, trust me on this one.... The simple way to check is to make a 100mb zip file, and keep copying it onto a DVD burnlist thingy until the disc shows up as full, you'll find you're about 4 zips short of 4.7gb

Wow, didnt know that. Stupid nero told me i had 4.7gb :) ....... Is that the same thing as you get with hard drives, ie 1mb is counted as 1000kbas apposed to 1024kb? (or whatever the figures are)

    the very same

Took about 3/4 days to arrive. Find it brilliant. It writes DVD-5 @ 8X so it's as fast as all the others on the market and I'm futureproofed when dual layered media becomes more readily availible (and cheaper!!).

Yep it writes single layer as well (DVD-5). It's the NEC ND-2510. It's on SVP for £64.99stg

This is pretty cool.. Didn't know about this shop before..

I'm paying through the nose here for DVD-R media.. Found a few shops in the UK with cheap media, but shipping ends up costing more than the blank discs themselves..

    This looks promising :)
    Thanks!

    Wow! Excellent!

Damn, I've just spent nearly 50 euro getting a 25 DVD-R spingle from Komplett, could have gotten the same for under 8 quid from PriceStorm (different brand but who cares, still 4x) !

daveg it arrived today buned a dvd straight away, i got some datasafe 8x discs with it but it was only burning at 4x just wondering if u can burn at 8x or is it only seeing the media as 4x
    thanx

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,201 ✭✭✭netman

Sometimes you need a firmware upgrade to recognise the more recent media..

If it's 4x blanks, then you shouldn't be surprised, but if they're 8x blanks and the drive won't recognise them properly try upgrading the firmware.

There are also some hacked firmwares that let you burn 4x at 2x media etc.
Loads of them floating around for Pioneer drives, I'm sure there's hacked versions for other manufacturers as well.

Also, have a look for a more recent version of your burning software.

so what ur sayin is i might b able to use whats left of my 2x discs and burn them at 8x? btw yes its 8x media im tryin to use trhanks 4 ur help

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,201 ✭✭✭netman

Well, you can get 2x4all firmware that lets you burn 2x on 1x media, which is pretty much fool-proof these days. Or you can be more adventurous and look for nx4all firmware, which will let you burn any media at any speed.

It doesn't guarantee the results though, crappy media burned at high speed will result in an unreadable DVD, so use at your own risk :)
