    Hi all,

Linux n00b here <-- So be gentle ;)

I have googled the bejesus out of this and no answer unfortunatly so...

I have SuSE 8 installed and everything is fine, trying to get to know the system etc

The problem lies in when I try to update it and the different packages etc

I get Yast 2 up and running, fine can see all the packages etc

Now I go to add in a place for it to grab updates from Cd\DVd\harddisk\http\ftp etc
(it can only see the CD)

I chose FTP, Pick server name + Dir on server. Grand do that
    Server ¦ ftp.heanet.ie
Directory ¦ (now here I have tried all sorts of adding bits in and talking bits diff servers etc but I always get the same answer :/

    ERROR( InstSrc:E_no_instsrc_on_media) <
    This error message

Now I can go to the Heanet and see all the folders etc

So now I just have no idea where I im going wrong
Do I need to have some other S/W installed to get to the Ftp server ?
Someone else mentioned it might have to do with "Passive ftp " ??

Any help / Pointers appreciated please.

Red Carpet - good for updating SuSE.

    Carpet - good for dating.

    Conclusion:

Four legs good, two legs bad.

System updates are handled automagically through YOU (although its been a while since I used v.8)

If however your upgrading through a FTP install, then in the installation source make sure the server you are upgrading from is at the top of the list and all others are turned off. The format should be:

    FTP: ftp.server.TLD
    Directory: /path/to/directory

make sure you have the correct path else it wont be able to find the package list, and that your authenticating properly, to be sure ftp to the server through the terminal.

Also be careful with an online upgrade, they have a tendancy to go wrong, a tendancy that gets worse with the amount of upgrading it will have to do.

    Regards,

    Ben

    Thanks for the help

Sorry for delay in getting back. I still couldn't fix the problem, so Ive posted on the Novell site, I might get more feedback of them.

Ive decided to move up to SuSE 9.1 aswell, hopefully that will fix my problem, plus thier seems to be alot more support for 9 than 8.

    Thanks again,
    Adrian

Sounds to me that the heanet mirror is incomplete. Try updating off the ftp.suse.de server.

You might just find it quicker to download the 9.1 personal iso from novell, or depending on your bandwidth ask at your local lug.

    Ben

Tried a different number of sites Gerry, I think the problem is sitting infront of the screen ;)

Got 9.0 Pro off the nice guys from Novell so im going to try that instead and then hopefully get that to update to the latest version.
