    Hi there
I was wondering if there are any sub 2000 euro laptops
for sale in ireland, I go to UCC & need one for school & I also want to play doom 3 ( hooked on Quake 3... ) when it comes out, so I need a beast, also
Win 64 is out soon so what's the point of buying a 32 bit one.
I'm looking for a laptop that costs less than 2 grand (that's with tax & shipping included) anyone got any advise :)

my only advise if you want a laptop of that spec for that price in ireland is to wait!

seriously though, did a bit of googling and they are out there, just not here.

    one in the US for $1999 AMD Athlon64 3200 Laptop 60G (7200 rpm) 1GB ATI M11 DVDRW http://www.gen-x-pc.com/amd64_notebook.htm

dunno what your chances are of getting one here though.

give it a month or two until WinXP64 is officially out (you can get it already if you're the resourceful [read: unethical :D] type.

i say google your little heart out and see what's out there, but keep your money in your pocket until at least the end of august or whenever they end up deciding to release XP64 and you'll see a rake of the things filling all the shelf space.

    patience grasshopper.

    PC World has the following:

    Athlon 64 processor
    256 ddr
    40 gig
    64 meg ATI Mobility 9200

Not sure what else. Its around the 1500 yo yo mark.

I dont know if this i swhat ur lookin for -
Doom 3 and laptop seem to scare me, unless you spend at least 2 grand plus.
    Maybe im wrong.

Yeah, I don't think a radeon 9200 is going to cut it for doom3.

For 2 grand you could get a nice sexy alienware laptop, but it would be running a 32 bit P4 3.0/HT.

The relaunched tiny computers in the UK are/were doing an A64,512mb,60Gb,Radeon Mob 9700 for 999 sterling which is about 1500 yo-yos. Got rave reviews as well.

Only problem will be getting it shipped from uk. Although for that price you could get a ticket on ryan air and collect it.

You mean if you sign up on the MS site and get them to send you a free pre-release copy?? Considering they are still releasing pre-release's (another one coming soon seemingly) I dont see how they would have a release version yet.

Any way you can run normal XP on the AMD 64's and there is talk about MS allowing users to use their license from 32Bit XP for 64Bit XP. This I will belive when I see it happening.. :( MS not forcing you to buy another license? Thats not something I thought would ever happen.

Well the AMD64 seems like a good choice anyway, but definetly look for 9700 graphics....... and atleast 512mb Ram.

Have a look mabye at .....

    http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/hardware/notebooksandtablets/productView.htm?quicklinx=3707

Only 256mb Ram but upgradable. 9700 graphics, AMD64 3000+, DVD Writer?

    is here

And it was 1 gig of ram but 'only' a radeon mob 9600 -should still kick ass.

One thought tho.....you know how laptop drivers are at the best of times....Im wondering if you will be able to get 64bit drivers for it yet????

    Thanx fellers
I,ve been off-line for a few weeks (hols) but I'm back now..
Chuffed to see all the replys & I'll certainly be checking out the links.... but the thought suddenly struck me mid-week: why not buy a crappy sub- grandish notebook & buy a new mo-bo with a 64 bit processor plus 512 megs of ram for 442 bucks over at http://www.Komplett.ie bung it in an old atx case & hey presto two desk tops & a LT.
I'm currently using a Mesh 1.4 gig with a geforce 3 128 meg & 512 megs of ddr so its time it became my 2nd desktop with the money I'd save I could even get a cheapish Graphics card anyone know a good card for 100+ euro, all I've got is 2 grand can't be a penny more for girlfriend reasons..
Once again ta for all your comments I really appreciate it

I know it is not a laptop but Sun are about to release a new 64bit Opteron desktop in Europe which will be cheap as chips. They have an Opteron base workstation now but it is a bit upmarket (read dear). Details are up on http://www.sun.com/desktop/workstation/ultra20/index.jsp

Certified for Red Hat, SUSE, Solaris 10 (64 bit), XP Prof (32 & 64bit). US pricing starts at $895 which includes 3 years warranty. Unless you use Solaris10 the other OS is an extra cost or own supply.

When released it will be supported here, I hope to have the pricing buy the middle to the end of this month.
