Airport baggage handlers vote to strike

    Monday, 05 July, 2004

LONDON (Reuters) - Airport baggage handlers have voted to go on strike, threatening serious disruption this summer at some of the UK's busiest hubs including London's main Heathrow and Gatwick airports, their union says.

Workers for ground handling group Aviance, which operates baggage handling and check-in operations at 17 UK airports, voted 4-1 in favour to strike in protest at the firm's 2.5 percent pay offer, the Transport and General Workers Union (T&G) said on Monday.

    No dates have been set.

"This is a resounding vote by our members which sends a clear signal to Aviance that they must improve on the offer," said Brendan Gold, TGWU national secretary for civil aviation.

The union, which has about 1,700 members working for Aviance, is holding more talks with the firm on Wednesday.

If no agreement is reached, the T&G workers could be joined by employees from the GMB and Amicus unions, who have also threatened action.

The T&G said any action would bring significant disruption at the airports, which also include Manchester, Stansted, Luton and Cardiff, and hit airlines for which Aviance provided ground services, such as Lufthansa, British Midland Airways, and Singapore Airlines.

Aviance UK is part of the Go-Ahead transport group.

Irish travellers passing through Britain's main airports, including Heathrow and Gatwick, are likely to face disruption, as baggage handlers there are planning a strike.

It is not yet known when the action will go ahead, but travel chaos could erupt over the summer months.

Members of the Transport and General Workers Union in Britain have voted to strike in a row over pay.
