sliding float is just a knot you put at a certain depth,
you dont have to use any particular float....

I think its called a Lock Slide float.

Adonis also has a very workable idea. Although I wouldnt like to have a knot in the middle of my line. The more knots you have the more weak points there are in your setup.

Another option is to find your depth, leave the line out and then tie a small piece of elastic where you want your float to stop. It does interfere with the cast slightly, but works quite well.

Thanks - I thik the lock slide float is gonna be the answer as it also means you dont have a long tail of line when casting.

I have a couple of swims around 13ft deep where there are some 'mothers' of Roach at about 10ft....you can get them with a ledger & a floating caster on a 3ft lead (bottom up) - but their bites are ofter quite shy & if there's water on the river, a float would give me the edge....

its not actually a knot on your line...
its an extra piece of line thats looped around your orginal..

the natural bouyancy of the float pusehes the knot back up till it reaches its exact depth...theres a name for the knot i cant think of it, but its like this...

it doesnt weaken your line, or leave a trail of line behind,
its actually quite versatile, and can be used in all types of fishing

    pike,,,sea,,, etc,,

    have a look here

I think you are thinking of the water knot.which uses a seperate piece of line to tie the knot on the main line.
For depths of more than 8-9ft i use one of the polaris floats that finds the depth itself and there is no knot needed on the line.
I bought one of them yesterday it cost 4.75E

The easiest depth finding float to use are the Polaris by Terry Smith, ( respected Sheffield Match Angler ) there is a whole range of them depending on the distance you need to cast
