17" TFT vs 19" CRT, which to buy?

I'm gonna be upgrading my screen pretty soon, but I can't decide on whats best, a 17" TFT for about €420 or a 19" CRT for €190, both new. My main use of my home PC would be games, and the size/price of the CRT is looking good.

But is there any other reason why I should go for the TFT? I have a 17" CRT at the moment, so it wouldn't be much of an increase in size, although my desk would be a little less cluttered.

A 19" CRT gives a viewable size of about 17", plus they're huge and they're also pretty damn heavy!

Depending on the TFT, the CRT may be better. The pixels in the TFT have a repsonse time ie. time it takes them to change from one colour to the next. A good response time for games is about 20ms or less. Check the specs of the TFT to see what it has. At the price you quoted I'd say it's a 20ms response.

Also the TFT doesn't give the glare that a CRT does, which can mean it's easier on your eyes.
If you can, see if you can get a trade in value for your 17" CRT (Unless you're buying online of course).

    A good 19" CRT won't be beaten.

Most have a viewable size of 18.1"

It depends if you can live with great performance and weight, or good performance.

Me? Well I like my above 100 refresh rates so my CRT is great.

But when you have a TFT refresh rates don't even come into the equation :)
I have a TFT at work and I love it - would prefer it over my massive 19" trinitron CRT at home.
The only issue is games - the one at work is a low end one designed for office use etc, doesn't even have a DVI input.

    1600 x 1200 @ 80khz with a viewable 18" for the CRT
    1280 x 1024 @ 75Hz for the TFT

I reckon i'll go for the CRT. Thanks for the pointers, I don't mind being restricted in certain areas, as long as I know in advance what the pros and cons are.

Now all I need is something to transplant my PIII-700 pumpkin into a PIV-3.0 horse and carriage.
