Trying to play DVD on PC

I've recently built my own PC and installed Windows XP and Windows Media Player 9 on it.
I've also got a Philips DVD RW drive installed (DVDRW416K/30).

Everything seems to be working ok, I can read cds and dvds from the drive and record files on blank dvds.

The only problem is when I am trying to watch a film DVD it will not launch. Window Media Play does not read a cd in the drive at all and at one stage I think it said I did not have the correct codecs. I downloaded the latest package of codecs from microsoft.com but it still will not read the dvd to play the movie.

I've checked for drivers or dvd decoders on the Philips.com website put found nothing.

I tired playing the dvd in another media play but to no avail.

Anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

    Cheers

It sounds like there's no decoder installed. I'm guessing since you built the pc you didn't get any software with the drive. Alot of dvds come with the InterActual player software so maybe try a few different dvds and see if you can install it from there otherwise see if you can download or buy one of the commercial ones like PowerDvd or Windvd etc.....

Hi, thanks for that. I found a DVD with the InterActual player. I installed it but it said it can't play the dvd content. I've tried a number of different film dvds now.

My preference would be to be able to play the movies in Media Player 9. Not sure what to do now that even the Inter software won't work?!

Actually, just found Intervideo DVD Xpack for Windows Media. Will install that and give it another bash.

    Cheers for your help.

media player won't play your dvd's, you'll need windvd/powerdvd or another alternative. There's also a little executable called dvdplay.exe in your system folder somewhere that should do the job but you do need a codec.

I got a download of klcodec. has all the codecs you'll need.

it does if you have a DVD codec installed

google for the K-Lite codec pack, that includes the cyberlink (powerdvd) dvd codec...
