You read in a magazine that this film, Audition, is being realeased on DVD, and it got great reviews.
stylised japanese film that starts out as a mild drama, then turns into one of the most shocking horrors of recent years
    .

I have never heard of it before, but its supposed to be brillant, the guardian review of it is as follows:
The movie becomes the kinkiest, creepiest, most pungently horror film in recent memory: as macabre as a jewel-inlaid dagger or antique instrument of torture. In its final act, it is a film to make the skin on the backs of your hands prickle with disquiet. Director Takashi Miike has devised a modern-day Jacobean revenge nightmare, which manages to make its delirium seem an integral and plausible extension of the ordinariness and sadness that prefigure it.

As far as i can make out it was made back in 1999.
Was wondering if anyone has seen it, would it be worth getting?

It was released already ages ago, but it's just getting a new "Collector's Edition" treatment. The only difference between the new release and the original release is 5.1 surround, and a 'fancy' carboard box.

I own it myself, and while I would consider it definetly worth buying, a lot of people didn't like it. I consider it a masterpeice, but the detractors of the film often say it's too slow. Personally I think it's perfectly paced, and it build the tension very slowly, so if that sounds interesting, yes you should go for it.

Audition starts very slowly but pulls you in with great acting. You don't even know you are watching a horror film. Then it gets scary & that's it you can't stop watching.
