You should be able to put it on your house insurance, but there will be restrictions on it.

I imagine it is near impossible to get bike insurance on it's own.

That's what bothering me because I'm only renting a house. So is there no way I can get it insured so? :(

You may be able to get it covered under your renter's insurance. But that'll only cover it while in the house.

I remember MBUK doing a survey on insuring a bike in Britain a few years ago, and prices varied hugely between places, and stipulated quite a few things. Some companies wouldn't pay out unless you could bring them your lock broken. So if they took your lock with the bike, tough. In Ireland I'd say it would be either far more restrictive or non-existent. Remember the only things insurers will touch in Ireland (half because they have to, half because they reap great profit), is car insurance, home insurance and public liability insurance. It's tough enough to get compulsory insurance for motorbikes, never mind voluntary insurance for bicycles.

TBH, if you're in any way a serious biker, and love your bike that much, buy a piece of crap bike for €150 and use that to ferry in and out of work. If it gets stolen once a year, it'd probably still be cheaper than insuring your good bike.

I remember a mate of mine getting bike insurance for about a fiver, but that was 15 years ago and the bike only cost £50.

I'm after spending a good few quid on a racing bike so I'm wondering about insurance for that, for theft and for damage or injury to myself or others in a crash...

There's an insurance note on the Wiki FAQ - I checked last night and you can get insurance for a rented property at www.123.ie - all-risks external insurance for unspecified items including bikes <€2000 can be had as part of the policy. More expensive bikes you have to specify in detail.

I was interested in getting one as recently someone (suppose some bad person) tried to steal my bike, managed to take out the wheels in order to getting frame alone but it was all chained together. So the main problem is if you are a renter (as I am) you won't be able to get insurance. Unless you'll have good relation with your landlord he could get your bike insured but then again bikes are being stolen alot so he might not be willing to insure it because he could lose his claim free discounts. Anyway it's pain in the a$%.

Homeowner's insurance generally covers bikes stolen outside the home, as long as they are listed on the policy; mine did anyway. Paid out in full when a crash wrote off the bike. Not sure if you can get renter's insurance with similar terms but I wouldn't see why not.

I'm a renter, have renters insurance with 123.ie and my bikes are covered for all risks. now matter where they are in the country, they will be covered.

can you get insurance if you get hurt

Both Cycling ireland and Triathlon Ireland have deals set up to get bikes insured. Coverage can be upto around 7.5k and is cheap too.

(Probably not worthwhile if its just a run around)

As far as I am aware the CI/TI insurance is excellent for racing (it covers crash damage, etc.) but very limited when it comes to a bike being stolen- it would have to be inside your house or inside a locked vehicle AFAIK (locked to a rack would not count.) Contents insurance will tend to cover the bike if stolen away from the home.

There's an insurance scheme at: http://www.biketowork.ie/site/insurance/

I got a quote for €52 for a €360 bike (without personal accident cover). (It requires a lock with a Sold Secure rating).
On my house insurance, the quote was €20, with a €250 excess.

I was looking for one without accidental damage cover (i.e. cover for theft only), but didn't find one.

The latest newsletter from Cycling Ireland said that the insurance is back on their website however nothing is showing up yet.

Hi preilly, how much is that costing you if you don't mind disclosing? Remember looking briefly at it before and thought it was very expensive.

Met them in the park yesterday where they were distributing flyers and bike make smoothies ... :)

Seems they are open for business.

100 quid for the two bikes.. doesn't sound like a bad deal. Haven't read the small letters yet though.

Who's that price from, is it cyclesure or 123.ie?

It's an online quote from cyclesure.

I got quoted 0.99euro for my bike worth 1200. I forgot to include my next one and when I went back it jumped to 151euro.

Should have taken it while I had the chance.

I recently had my Giant FCR 3 stolen from Kilmainham. Bike was listed as an addon to the FBD home insurance policy back in Tipperary. I got €500 from FBD last week.

The bikes was added to the policy along with my desktop computer for "all risks". Bike was covered up to €500. It cost €50 to add these two items two the policy.

    Hope that helps..

i did a lot of phoning around insurance companies today, for house contents + 2 bikes for a rented house. most quotes i got (including quinn) did not cover the bike when it was outside the house because it is a rented property, talk about a useless policy option, the guy couldn't even explain the reasoning behind this, except to say that it was because i didn't "own" the house therefore the bike wouldn't be covered outside the house, makes no sense.

i talked to 123.ie on the suggestion in this thread and got a good policy for the house insurance + two good bikes, covered in and out of the house. the bikes weren't much extra on the policy. phone them up to get a better price than online, i also asked if that was the best price he could give me and he knocked another 20 quid off. highly recommended for cyclists renting.
