ok i was thinkin this might be better off here than in the gaming thread simply cuz i think u guys will be able to answer my Q's better :D

ok so heres the problem at the moment im running the biggest pile of rubbish computer ever (yes my new rig is coming soon!) and i want to play the Playstation 2 online. Im on IOL Broadband and i have a USB Modem

so my question is how do i play the Playstation 2 online without going near my PC (ie internet connection sharing)

anyway before you answer that i thought i'd amuse you with how compustore and sony told me how to set it up

Compustore: After asking one guy he sent me to another guy who simply said "wouldnt have a clue", when i started asking him if he sold usb routers cuz this is what i think i need he replied again "wouldnt havent a clue" i felt like askin him if he wanted to even sell me anythin, then i realised since im just some punk who doesnt want to buy an overly priced Packard Bell then the answer is no. he suggested tho that i try the Sony centre, which was nice of him

Sony: "To play the playstation online you need broadband and a network adapter, then all you have to do is plug your phone line into the back of the playstation" I was like wow wow wow buddy hold up, u really dont have a clue what your on do u (of course i didnt actually say this, i just let him go on) he concluded then by telling me i need a usb to ethernet adapter..... hmmmm

So lads i put it to you, what is the cheapest hardware availble to play the PS online, do i need to buy a seperate modem, or just this USB router which i cant find anywhere (i know i probably aint looking hard enuf) and whats the chances of IOL sending me out one of those handy USB/Ethernet modems to replace my one?

oh and yes ive read all the articles on playstation.ie and theyre just confusing me more

    thanx again

    brian

Buy a router, connect your broadband one end, connect the Playstation the other with some cat5 cable, and your PC if you want.

Put in the disc that comes with the Network adapter for the PS2, and follow instructions.

yes but what router to buy, it has to be a USB router apparently

It doesn't have to be usb.
It can be ethernet if your pc has a network card spare. The playstation2 will only accept ethernet connections.
If you dont have a free network card I'd suggest buying one and getting a ethernet router. Much better. :)

    Yes USB is quite poo.

Get your self a four port ETHERNET DSL router.

    Get the PS2 network adapter.

Connect the phoneline into the back of the DSL router.

Connect the PS2 via ethernet cable to the router.

Connect the PC via ethernet cable to the router (need a network card in your PC for this, and I would recommend that you get one, or you wont be able to configure it, you can get a USB router, but make sure it has a ethernet connection aswell so you can connect the PS2 to it. USB sucks though)

Log onto the router with the PC and set it up with your user name and password (the manual should tell you how, but its usually type "http://192.168.0.1" in internet explorer)

Now your router should be set up to connect to the net, now set your PC up to "obtain IP automatically" and it will get the IP, and should be able to go on the internet.

When this works, just start configuring your PS2 with the disk that comes with the network adapter.

/\ Thats the way my PS2 is setup, also if your PC is complete poo you could consider getting one of the Linux kits, they cost about 120 euro and come with the network adapter, hard drive, keyboard+mouse and the PS2 linux kit, then you have a nice linux workstation as well as an online PS2 :)

would it be possible to get a wireless router set up in room A, so you can play PS2 online (also in room A), yet still surf/play games online in room E on a PC?

    thnax for the replies,

this might seem an obvious question, but using Gilbet's method do i not need the usb modem or does the router act as the modem?

Buy a router/modem combo. Apparently the Netgear DG834 is very good for PS2 online (mine should arrive tomorrow, goodbye ICS! :)). Seems to be cheapest on Amazon.co.uk (odd that!). :)

Yes a DSL router means a DSL modem/Router.

Man, so much for trying! The Netgear DG834 is guaranteed to work with PS2 online, some routers have issues with allowing DNAS authentication which you may not find out until you buy it. DG834 is €110 inc shipping from Amazon.co.uk.

Cheap Router does not equal a DSL router. The router Einstürzende recommeded is what you should go for.
