Im having problems with the optical out on my nf7-s. When I try to record to my minidisc I just get a really loud fuzzy noise similar to a radio. The cable and minisdisc are fine so thats not the problem.
I tried to google the problem but couldnt find anything relevant.
Ive messed about with the stings to no avail.
Does anyone know what the problem way be or have any suggestions to try?

    Thanks

not sure if optical wires get the same interference levels as normal wires, but wheni record my minidiscs uses a standard wire, i get the interference too. As far as i know its electrical interference, and turning off my monitor, and keeping the cable as far from active power cables helps reduce the noise.

I tried turning off the monitor, unplugging devices from the computer but there is no change.

When you say interference can you still hear the sound your trying to record but its bad quality?
cause all I hear is very high pitched screeching.

I have this sound card lying about. Would this have better sound than the onboard card?

If I do get this to work, would it be possible to have a playlist in winamp or similar and have it put trackmarks in between tracks(like standalone cd players do), I know you can have a 4 sec gap but it would be handy if I could get winamp to do it for me without gaps.

    Thanks for the help.

Creative MiniDisc Center should help you with trackmarks etc. I havn't used it myself ( i always used a proggy for winamp called "Pause Between Tracks" to sort that out for me.

Basically i set winamp to cut out leading and trailing silences, and set PBT to force a 5 second gap between songs.

When i say "interference" i mean i get a buzz off the wire, but the music is still listenable. Frm your description, it sounds like you can't hear the music that well at all. Try not to bend the optical cable too much, no sharp 70degree bends in it if you can avoid it, but anything under 30degrees should be grand.

Also, are you 100% sure it is an optical out, and not SPDIF (or whatever its called). I'm pretty certain it is optical out though...

That soundcard would be better than the built in. Builtin stuff is generally fine for normal use, but seperate dedicated cards are always better. Test it with your cable and see if it works for ya. Its possible the optical out is borked on the mobo.

    Edited last paragraph...
