Fee for standing order failure

I have a standing order on my account to pay the rent. However today, the bank (BOI) tried to take the standing order, and due to the fact that a cheque hadn't cleared in time, it was refused. It's going through tomorrow, so no loss there, but I was informed that I will be charged E12.70 for the failed standing order.

that's a lot of cash for a trivial event

That's where they make their money. Relatively small amounts punters don't generally argue about. I've kicked up in the past when the AIB have put me in the red for a quid or two, and have had the charges taken off again.

I have a couple of accounts with 0 bal at the moment. I haven't had a chance to close them down. They don't have overdraft facilities but yet AIB put them in the red with their bank charges.

if I use my laser card the account can go into the red, but they won't put it in the red by E30 to take a standing order?? grr

I'm definitely writing a letter to the back manager, as it's their fault that the cheque hadn't cleared in time to meet the standing order.

Oddly enough, because they put the account into the red its seems to now have an overdraft facility, as its also allowed a standing order to go through, whereas normally it wouldn't.

How do you reckon that it was their fault? How long had the cheque been lodged before the standing order payment came out?

I think banks normally will often charges (upon request) if you've only been in the red for a couple of days.

I recently got charged 35ukp from Ulsterbank in Belfast, after an attempted
direct debit failed, twice. !! (due to lack of funds)
They wouldn't refund it either.. I think I'll find another bank.

and people complain about ROI charges
    £35 is extortionate

although it's your own fault for not having the funds to meet it
