i think this is an absolute disgrace...
not only are the darkness not good enough to headline a festival, but putting them in for bowie? thats jus a joke.
whoever decided this should be sacked... another band should have been bowies replacement.... not a band with one album, that most people got bored of after a month

    emm..

The darkness were already lined up to play at Oxegen. They've just been bumped up one place in the pecking order now that bowie has bowed out.

The real issue is what mcd are going to do with the appearance fee they would have had to pay Bowie had he been playing. My guess is they are probably doing their best to secure another "big" act, but if they don't get one many people are going to be demanding a partial refund. I myself am bitterly disappointed about it but there are enough other decent acts there to make it worthwhile going.

<edit>oh and i notice that mcd.ie still have banner ads that include Bowie - you'd think they'd sort that out</edit>

In fairness the other thread has degenerated into a "I Love/Hate Bowie/The Darkness" discussion...

    Anyway...

Why should we have to pay the same amount of money for a festival that is now minus the main act ?

Well - if you went to t'other thread you'd see that somebody reported somebody else as saying that MCD may be offering refunds to those that had oneday sunday tickets....

i know they where already lined up to play but i dont think they should be headlining.

For gods sake, the darkness are nowhere near good enough to replace Bowie. I got a twoday ticket, and i'm really tempted to return the blasted thing cos bowie isn't there. Bowie is the reason i went!

I'm not a fan of the darkness at all, in fact i;ve been going around saying how **** they are. Now i have to go to a concert they are headlining!?!?!

The only thing that'd make this up would be if another Bowie gig (or gigs) was organised where people with oxegen tickets get first preference, or get in free. But the odds of that happening are zero.

I'm rightly annoyed at the moment.

I'd say they'll keep most of the money and just get whatever they can to replace Bowie. I was thinking they'd go the extra mile and actually replace him with a suitable headliner, but you never know, they might get someone good to play under The Darkness.

i know the frames and rice aren't playing but i think mcd should put the money towards both of them double headlining on sunday...

mcd are twats and haven't given any irish artists good slots...the frames and rice toured together and they could both mess around on the main stage for about 2 hours...think its a reasonable suggestion anyway!!!

That sounds like an appalling way to headline Oxegen. And I like The Frames and Damien Rice...

oh well it seems that no oxegen thread can survive without laying into the darkness..

It would actually be my worst nightmare to see the frames and Damien Rice "mess about" for a few hours, followed by the darkness prancing about the stage - defiling and making a mockery of classic bands like Led Zeppelin.

My only comfort is that in years to come the darkness will be only vaguely remembered as some kind of joke-act, whereas Led Zeppelin will be venerated for all time as Gods of Rock.

Pixies would be great replacement, perfect in fact, anyone know if they'll be playin anywhere else that night?

I'd be delighted if the frames headlined and they would pull the crowd but i can see how lots of people would be appalled by that so wouldnt really be fair.

Dont think they will neither, they were originally meant to be playing second from the headliners but then someone disagreed and they were only offered to play before Kings of Leon

    Bring back The Flaming Lips!!!

they more than made up for The White Stripes cancelling last year!

they could dress up as ziggy stardust and rock it!

    they got my vote.

    either them or Mundy*

    *seriously fcuking jokin

Well that's it, Muse are gonna have one hell of a crowd!

okay not so much mess around but double headline....at such a short notice it will be very difficult to get a internation act...rice and the frames instead of the darkness...

I think its far too late to get a replacement act of any significance at this stage. Maybe if he'd pulled out 2 weeks ago, but not now. They've already confirmed that the Darkness will be headlining now - the only thing is that they might get someone to replace The Darkness as No. 2 on the Main Stage bill.

pixies play t in the park in scotland on sunday night. Frames and Damien c*ntface headlining a festival the worst idea i've ever heard. On the plus side. I now get to go see Wilco. there's absolutely no chance of there being a reduction in price, even on the sunday tickets - and tickets will not be refunded. You're paying to attend a festival, not paying to see the acts at the festival. That's the way it works - and if the only reason you were going was to see Bowie, well you deserve to lose your sixty bills. Would have loved to have seen him myself but I ain't gonna bitch and moan when there are so many other quality acts on over the weekend.

On an aside - why do people care when the darkness play or don't play - if you don't like them don't go see them, go see something else, you're not obliged to go see them just cos they're headlining. It's quite a good move on the organisers part, considering their "lowest commen denominator" approach. won't be watching them myself but I can guarantee you that almost half of the attendees will. Most of the people that go to witnness don't post on music forums, they listen to the radio. It's unfortunate, but true.

    Have a good weekend all.

don't see how my suggestion was as bad as you make it out to be....the frames have a back catalougue of music for over 10 years and a massive fan base in ireland ... damien rice has also got a big fanbase... imo they would be a *better* headliners than the darkness

I don't want to get too off topic but this has been bugging me...

Am I the only person who doesn't get The Frames?

    At all.

I've seen them live before, heard lots of there stuff and I have a very wide taste is music but I cannot get past thinking that they are really really sh1t.
