Seems Sony have a new doo-hickey coming out soon .

Can any of you smart folks explain to me why the hell they'd want to hit the market with a new thingum that won't support mp3. Are they planning a two pronged thing so that all new albums on Sony Music will be 'rippable' to some format.

I've been thinking this over dinner, and can't see any reason for Joe Public to embrace a whole new file format just to save a few euro on the price of an iPod or whatever...

Sony dont do mp3 players anyway, any of their discmen, mindisc players, network walkman etc play ATRAC files. The software you get with them converts the Mp3's to ATRAC before it puts them on whatever media it uses, this wont be any different.

Hasn't got a chance in hell. Lets see Apple have a hugely popular device that plays mp3s (potentially bigger capactiy too) - perhaps we could pay €55 less to use a propreitary format - which will still make it more expensive than the play everything iRiver and the Creative Zen Xtra.

The japanese will probably go nuts for it - don't see it doing so well over here.
