One of Dublin's new LUAS trams was involved in a minor collision with a car on Harcourt Street this morning. The car collided with the tram while it was turning onto the street. Around 300 passengers were temporarily evacuated from the tram before being allowed to board again a short time later. Nobody was injured in the incident and it caused no delays to the LUAS service, which began operating at 3pm yesterday.

A Luas tram was involved in what is being described as a minor collision with a car on Harcourt Street this morning.

The wing mirror of the car was slightly damaged and the tram sustained minor damage in the incident.

Around 300 passengers were evacuated from the tram but were allowed back on within a matter of minutes and the tram resumed its journey.

The Railway Procurement Agency says 40,000 people used Luas yesterday.

By mid-morning today, the agency says it had already carried around 12,000 people. Queues began building at around 10.30am this morning and extra trams had to be put on to meet demand.

Around 300 commuters were forced off a Luas tram yesterday after it was involved in a collision with a car on Dublin's Harcourt Street. It was the first accident involving the new light-rail system.

The Rail Procurement Agency, which is responsible for implementing Luas, said the accident was a minor one and no injuries had been sustained.

The Luas was travelling northwards at around 11.30 a.m. when a motorist attempted to turn right onto Clonmel Street from Harcourt Street.

The car collided with the front carriage, breaking an indicator on the Luas and the wing mirror on the car.

The Luas carriage and the car were also scraped in the collision.
