....or to some other format. Basically i want to compress my DVD movie to something between 700MB to 1GB.

I've seen a number of suggestions for programs out there and have even tried a few. But they all seemed overcomplicated and very non-intuitive. I just want a one-stop method to rip and convert.

    Any suggestions?

    TIA

I'm surprised I found it brilliant and very easy to use.....most of the other programs I could find were commercial.

Auto GK is very good. A lot better than dr.divx which has problems with AC3 soundtracks.
    Get auto gk from doom9
You'll need dvd decrypter also, which is available from doom9.

I found some rips by Dr. Divx were terrible, full of white blocks. I read on the Dr.Divx forums that it might be due to having Hyperthreading turned on. Apart from that I found the program very very simple to use

    another vote for Auto GK.
the standalone version of dvd decrypter complained about a missing file, so i just installed the gordian knot suite instead (which includes dvd decrypter amongst other things)

a very simple program to use, and it's great for converting a few films while you're at work and then shutting down your pc when done

I've found problems with Dr Divx before if you had exotic codecs from Nimo Codec Pack or Aces Mega Codecs Pack on your PC.

But the guy did ask for a one-stop method.

There are loads of programs which will give better quality if you don't mind learning or expending some effort...

so autoGK is a collection of programs to produce the divx? i have dvddecryptor and its fine, very simple.

DvdDecryptor doesn't create DivX's, it just copies the DVD files to your harddrive, and decrypts them

dvdshrink doesn't create divx's, it makes a smaller DVD from a large DVD.

If you want minimum effort and decent quality, go for Auto Gordianknot (autoGK). It is your best way forward. If you want best quality, you'll want to be using normal Gordian knot, but ideally you'd have someone sit beside you to run you through your first rip. Once you do it twice, its fairly easy.

    Auto GK

I have tried Dr. Divx (It messed up on the first go)
Tried DVD Magic ( It is simple but limited, and messed up sometimes)

Basically Auto Gk does what it is told.

If you wan't a specific filesize (ie 700meg) it will do it to 699/700 every
    time!!

i'm also interested in this as i have encoded a dvd since my p3 days when i used flaskmpeg and got 6fps on encoding.

i was a dab hand at it then though but now i haven't a clue

i installed autoGK but it was looking for things like virtual dub and stuff on installation

    are they necessary?

    data

Auto GK does everything for you; just read the instructions it installs all the necessary programs for you and it makes sure they all work together. The only thing I can remember you need to input is the files size, it's pretty good.

AutoGK auto does everything, all you tell it are if you want a divx or an xvid and how big you want it. Thats the way its written,as simple as possible. If you want the more advanced featuress use normal gordian knot, but you need to know what your doing.
Personal in think AutoGK is superb, in my eperiences a lot better than dr.divx, and bearing in mind autoGK and gordian not are free programs, and dr. divx is not.

OT: Whats do people use for encoding cartoons?

i use XviD in cartoon mode for cartoons :p. In my opinon, XviD gives equal quality to divx, has more advanced features, and is free. Therefore it is the better choice. Of course, other people differ in opinion, they think "Its open source, therefore its *****". Its all up to yourself, they are all equally compatible.(when using standard features)
