pc components dilemma

I was all set after reading COL_LOKI's excellent thread and had a fair idea in mind and was thinking of of building a pc based on a Athlon 64, Socket 754 mobo. But after doing more research I'm more confused then ever!

I'm after finding out that alot more Socket 939 boards will be released soon, and also that a new format for cases BTX is coming.

If I was to go the athlon 64, socket 754 route what would my upgrade options be in say a years time? Or would it better to hold off a couple of months until more socket 939 mobos come out and drop in price? How serious is this btx standard and could it obsolete the atx format??

I know its quite an old dilemma but I would like to be able to future proof my pc so its not completely obsolete in a years time.

Socket939 will be AMD's main performance platform and the Socket754 will become the more budget range. So the 939 should be alot more future proof IMO, and it also has Dual DDR.

The BTX thing is hard to call, looks like it might take over alrite. (this is case and PSU change BTW)

Another issue is PCI express GFX cards, and DDRII.

DDRII wont be used by AMD until next year, PCI-E is most lightly going to be more expensive when it comes out.

TBH its not going to be a good time to buy with upgrading in mind for another year almost, and then there will be more things to wait for. The 939 would be a better choice but its over double the price of 754.

    Hard one to call TBH.
