    Hi,
I re-installed XP after my pc was infected by htrag w32 virus or whatever it was, so I'm trying to update the service pack etc (because after about 1 minute of connecting to the net for the first time, I got infected by that sasser worm or whatever it is) so now I've downloaded sp1 and it says you need to restart your computer to complete, but it wont complete, it just keeps doing the same thing over and over every time I try it. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Hi Cormie,

As you say that you got hit as soon as you went on-line, I assume that you're not behind a firewall. If that's the case, it's pretty likely that you were hit by Sasser.

    1) Take your PC off the network.

    2) Get the removal tool Here and clean your PC.

    3) Switch on the firewall that comes with XP.

    4) Now try your Windows Update.

If you have another PC you can go to windows update and choose the personalise option - in it there is a button for windows catalog - you can use this to download the SP on that machine and then bring to your PC.

Now, it actually worked without having to do any of that stuff, fortunately for me.

But if it happens again, can I just download the personalised thingy from this pc now and put it on CDR because I've had to install sp1 about 4 times now and it would be so much easier just to have it on a cd, what option do I pick to download it?

    Thanks:)

Just go to download.microsoft.com and search for it. You're looking for something like "service pack 1 network install" - i.e. the full whack, weighs in at about 130MB i think.
Service pack 2 is probably going to be out reasonably soon, so you may want to wait and just download that instead.

Service pack 2 will most likely be a cumulative update. I have SP1 on cd if anyone needs a copy burned.

WinXP SP2 will be a fairly major upgrade a lot more than the usuall accumalation of updates. It will include a much more functional firewall for instance and functional changes in general including network protection, memory protection, browser protection etc. check iy out here xp sp2 before downloading sp1 you might want to wait.
