Scary Customs Experience

Just got this letter from Customs yesterday.

I think I know what the package in question is and it's contents are not techincally legal in this country (think airgun/steroid type illegal as oppossed to heroin or child porn type illegal)

What I need to know is do Customs have anyway comeback against me?

Should I call them and get them to open it for me? (Just to make sure it is what I think it is) Or should I just ignore it?

In my eyes they have no proof that I ordered or was involved in getting this package sent to Ireland.

    Whatcha think?

Get your mother to ring and plead ignorance :D

If they open it and it containts something illegal expect another letter but not so nice as last one.

I don't mind getting nasty letters kdjac but do you think they can charge me on anything?

If you're in doubt of the legality and you recieved a letter, then cut your losses and ignore the fact that they contacted you for ever. If you ask them to open it for you, then you take responsibility for the contents. If you say nothing then they don't have anything on you. Just remember to post said item to a different address if you order it in the future, they won't accept two ignorings.

Just say what's in the parcel, and people might be better able to advise...

    Inflatible woman? Severed head? What?

depends whats in the package. If its sometyhing like illegal dvds or cds they may just destroy the contents with no comeback to you

if its something like drugs however or seeds to hash Im sure they might take further action

the fact is theve sent a letter styating that they will be opening the package. Why?
nless their dogs have already sniffed it out.

Customs dont have to do that. I have had packages opened on me without my consent and then sent on to me.

I know this cause when i track some things on the courier sites sometimes it says "Into Custom"s. and parcels usually have tears in them or opened and reselotaped.

Its happened to three differant packages for me

Plus customs dont usually target items sent from EU countries unless they know exactly whats in em.

    Lmfao...

Yeah, let us know how you get on with your "not technically legal" herbs!!:p

Sent him a letter for him to take responsibility for it.
Atm they have no legal case on him if he replys saying its his he gets charged ,if he rpleisa nd says i have no idea what that is he maybe covered.

Getting drugs sent to your house , brilliant idea.

Herbs? Herbs as in legal highs like salvia - or are you saying you got your friend to post you marajuana?

If it's hash - you foolio! Ring them up, plead ignorance and tell them you aren't expecting any packages and have no idea what it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,548 ✭✭✭Draupnir

Just reply saying you dont know what that is and give em permission to do what they want with the package.

Say you are not expectin a package.

    Then you should be ok.

personally speaking, I would just ignore the letter, what exactly can they do?
Surely you cannot be held responsible for stuff posted to you in this fashion – after all, someone could have posted said ‘herbs’ to you as a joke….
plead ignorance if it’s pushed any further

PM me if you require a new address for next time :)
or suggest to your friend that next time he make up a company name instead of using yours
    amateurs  :p

Nice one Beruthiel, I might take you up on that one! :D

When I said Herbs, I meant herbs as in Salvia, possibily some Kratom too.

    Not Marijuana!

AFAIK Salvia is not illegal in Ireland but I am sure Customs could kick up a fuss!

I've had friends get similar letters after some packages they sent from Amsterdam (containing dope) got stopped and nothing ever happened, so I guess if it's Salvia I have nothing to worry about!

    <crosses fingers>

Does anyone actually have any personal experience in these matters?

    Any Customs Guys/Girls on Boards?

Salvia isn't illegal in Ireland, I know loads of people who've ordered it online and had no problems with delivery. Never heard of Kratom though...

Phew, ok, I should be ok then!

    Kratom

A mate of mine had another mate (and I don't mean like 'my mate Dave' type of thing, was seriously just two regular mates) send something from Amsterdam before and the only thing that arrived was a letter from customs just like that. It was duly ignored and nothing was ever heard since.

    [edit]
sorry, left reply window open while doing something else, just read other replies. Carry on :D

You can legally send and receive magic mushrooms through the post here, AS LONG AS THEY'RE ALIVE! Once they're dried out they become illegal.

    Pretty cool, eh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,372 ✭✭✭Kone

Yeah and dried shrooms are considered Class A drugs and are about half as potent as fresh ones which AFAIK aren't classed at all!

What stupid drug laws we have!

A friend was posted hash from amsterdam and got that exact same letter. He ignored it and nothing ever came of it. UK might take it more seriously than Netherlands though

I bought salvia in asha boutique once for jaysus' sake.

Although, any time I've ever seen anyone get one of these letters, it's always been when something illegal was expected in the post. Noone ever went in to collect their stuff, just in case :) Having said that, surely you couldn't be held responsible for something someone else sent you? Hmm, maybe if they do try to pin something on you, you could have them done for entrapment...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

I don't think entrapment is illegal in Ireland.

I thought I read something recently in the Times about it being made illegal here in the last few months...

A mate of mine posted weed back to himself from the Dam. He got the exact same letter as you did. He talked to a mate of his who was a solicitor and was told to ignore it. He did and never heard of again. Customs send hundreds of these letters out every month. If they were to actually follow them up they'd never get anything else done.

So if you don't mind loosing your package ignore it, or if your feeling cocky give them a ring and challenge them.

Salvia Divinorum! :) AFAIK it's still legal here and in the UK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,678 ✭✭✭Selik

A few years ago I ordered some dried Magic Mushrooms from a website in Holland (before they made dry ones illegal there too!) and I got the exact same letter as you. Suffice to say I most certainly DID NOT contact Customs like they suggest in the letter, I just binned the letter and wrote off my mushrooms and my, erm, colourful plans for the weekend coming up. :D

About two weeks later my mushrooms arrived in a small box with white customs tape all over it. The writing on it was green and is said:

"Open by Customs for examination"

Weird sh*t - coz there was about a 100g of dried shrooms in that box and they obviously opened it, had a look and decided to post them on to me being the kind and considerate bunch of people they are!

I guess they were more concerned with finding some coke or smack or something...

I wouldn't worry too much about your Salvia and I'd expect that they will send it on to you once they're opened and inspected the contents of your package.
