    Hey
Just built a new PC and put my old DVD drive into it. It plays CD's fine however it states that I need a decoder for DVD's. I didn't realise that you needed this. I thought the driver would do all the work. Is there anywhere to get a free one for windows XP they all seem to cost money and I don't want to fork out any to find it doesn't work.

Its a samsung SD-606. About 5 years old. Maybe I should get a new one?

    Thanks

I thought Windows XP came with DVD decoding built into Windows media player - I guess I was wrong. I don't think there are any free ones around due to the licencing fees that have to be paid for use of the DVD decoding technology.
Check the CD's that (may have) came bundled with your motherboard. I bought an MSI motherboard about 2 years ago and it came with an MSI-branded version of WinDVD.

Forgot to check my mother board bundle. Will do. Fingers crossed.

    Thanx.

It was Windows Media plyer that asked for the decoder :(

Actually, now that I think of it, give VLC a try: http://www.videolan.org/

it seems to play pretty much everything I throw at it.
