My family doesnt believe in multi accounts, so we only have one account. I've been recently looking at a few files that I dont want anyone else to know I was looking at (private documents and stuff ;) ) and need to know how to disable this feature, because until now, I've been clicking about 20 text files so that the private documents dissapear off the list!

    Any help appreciated!

This can be done it depends on the OS but most are somthing similar -

in the common case right click on the start button
    > goto properties
    > (XP) Customize > Clear
    > (98) I think click clear recent documents

I only know how to prevent it from updating in Windows XP Pro (i.e. the documents will never appear there). This is a little more complicated and involves using the security policies.

    Hope this is helpful

ah got it off someone in IRC:

(20:11:10) (Dekken|away) right click on the start button
    (20:11:11) (Dekken|away) properties
(20:12:09) (Dekken) customise start menu and then advanced murd

Thanks anyway.... I can continue to view my fathers private crop reports!

The only thing with using that method is it clears more than just the recent documents eg. things typed in the run box, recently typed url's etc.

If you're on XP Pro then you can turn off the recent documents through the group policies:
Click start->run and type 'gpedit.msc' (without the comma's). On the left double-click on 'Administrative Templates' (the one at the very bottom of the list) then click 'Start Menu and Taskbar'. On the right scroll down to 'Do not keep history of recently opened documents' and enable it. The Documents thing will still be in the start menu but it won't show anything.

You can completely disable the Recent Documents feature, have a look at this..

    http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/545/

of course, that will disable it for everybody...

Yeah, you can do it exactly as I posted above except enable 'remove Documents menu from Start Menu' instead of 'Do not keep history of recently opened documents' but I figured he'd probably want it to still be there (albeit empty) so no-one wondered where the hell it had gone :)
