I have tried to install an new Sharkoon CPU Fan, installation worked, but the pc only came on for about 2 sec and then went off. So I put back in the old one and everything works O.K. I have a 300W power supply that I haven't got around to upgrading yet, is it the obvious on e that the power supply not being big enough? I have 2 case fans, 2 Hard Drives, 1 CD and 1 DVD drive.

hmm i wouldn't be so sure about the psu, but if you think it is the psu, unplug the cd drives, hdd etc. and see if you can get into the bios.

a thought i had after thinking it over was that your original cpu fan connected directly to the motherboard using one of those pin connections (3-pin or whatever) and that perhaps that sharkoon fan uses a molex connector is that the case perchance? as the computer may be automatically shutting down as it doesn't think a fan is present. if thats the way it is i would think there would be an option in the bios to disable this protection

Aye what data said,it's prob the motherboard not detecting the fan....so it shuts down.Make sure the new sharkoon fan is plugged into the same connection as your old fan

I tried the PC without the new sharkoon fan (no fan) and it wouldn't work, and the connections for the old an new fan are the same (3-pin). When I turn on the PC it only stays on for 2 sec the monitor doesn't even come on. No sure whats going on, but as I siad as soon as I put the old fan back in it worked away as normal.

perhaps the new fan you have is dodgy. if its the same connection and the only thing thats changing i suppose it must be the fan

It could also be a very low RPM fan which makes the MB react as if you had no fan. Is the fan actually spinning?

Yeah, i was thinking the new fan might be dodgy. But it spins for the couple of seconds the the pc is on. I thought that a pc should be able to run without a fan, which i this case it didn't. The new fan speed is 2500rpm.

Dataisgood where did you find the best place to get the antec trueblue 480W.

Boot into the BIOS with the old fan connected - disable power off on CPU fan fail.

Just to repeat what was said above, disable the option in bios to turn off the computer if the fan fails.

There was another problem recently where someones computer was screwing up because of the low RPM fan they had on it. You could be expericeing the same problem.

i picked it up at www.overclock.co.uk as i was getting other stuff from them at the time such as my thermal right heatsink. its about 120euro there but there delivery is a bit messed up not sure how it works.

www.itdirect.ie used to have it too not sure if they still do and it might not be much more expensive. its a very good psu holds it rails really well

Thanks for all the help guys, going to try the bios craic later on tonight. I called the shop where i got it from an they will have to test it themselves to see if it is faulty, but they think that it is probably something else, naturally.

My pc did the same thing... Was setting it up yest n the fan on the cpu kept slowing right down causing the pc to shut down, went into the bios n changed the settings n it works fine(like a hairdrier!!!I want watercooling..)

Firstly i doubt its the PSU as the ammount of power that the fan needs is very small.

Also with reguards the CPU fan spinning too slowly id doubt that aswell (although its possible). I have watercooling in my setup and therefore have no fan at all. I use to boot up find and get to just before the logon screen and the PC would shut down. This was the point when the system figured out there was no CPU fan/ or it wasent running.

Ive had a problem very close to this before, everything was fine with the old Heatsink, swapped it for a new Spire one and it started for 2 secs and shuts down. I tried everything, then put back on the old one - perfect. Tried the Spire again and now its perfect . Make sure you have it seated correctly, it might be possible the machine thinks theres no heatsink on it at all.

To eliminate the "low RPM" thing, plug the CPU fan into one of the Case fan connectors on the mobo, and plug the old heatsink fan into the "CPU" connector on the mobo (leaving it disconnected).......... if it doesent boot then the low RPM isint your prob.

To eliminate "Heatsink seating problem" you could install the old heat sink and put the connector into a case fan connector on the motherboard - if it boots then its most lightly that the new heatsink just needs to be re-sit a couple of time.......

Tried to disable CPU fan fail in the bios and i can't find it, the guy in the shop thinks the same. I have a canyon mainboard, and under 'PC HEALTH STATUS' i can see all the temp, fan speed etc. but everything is in grey and i can't see a way to get into it. Has anybody any ideas?

is there something in your bios like turn on advanced options, that usually lets you mess with the other stuff

All I seem to have is Advanced Bios Features and Advanced Chipset Features, but nothing in them seem to relate to a CPU Fan.
