HD 'click of death' ?

HD just started clicking a lot, failed to boot once or twice, froze a couple more.

It's a dodgy chinese make 'Excelstor', SMART hard drive monitor shows no problems though, and it is only a few weeks old.

Should I just resign myself to it's death? I have a new system on order anyway as this one has given me lots of niggles, and no really important data on it.

It would be nice to salvage a few bits though. Anthing I can do to help it recover?

Back up anything you have on it and get it RMA'd from wherever you bought it.

It should still be under warranty if its so new.

Excelstor drives are "refurbished" seagates and western digitals. Real crap. The only thing worth doing is splitting the drive open for the magnets or using it as a paperweight...

If I was you I wouldn't use the drive until my new system came, then I would leave the old drive in the freezer overnight in a waterproof bag, attach it to the new pc as a secondary(slave) drive, boot up, and copy any info over to the master drive that you want to keep. You are pretty much guarenteed to get one good chance to copy over your info, even if the drive is truely poked...........

Brought it back to the shop, they said they would have to test it (which was fair enough) then said that I could only expect a replacement.
I said I wanted a refund, as Excelstor sounds like a dodgy make and I don't want another one, and I don't really need another hard disk now.
He was being awkward about it so I will see what happens when they ring me back.
