ISDN woes

    Lo guys,

I am having a very odd problem when browsing the net on my 64k ISDN line. The pages do not load properly, such as leaving some off the page sections blank and "hanging" while it tries to load the rest of the page. My two green little men on the taskbar are not transmitting data at a consistent rate at all.

    Some info :

Billion ISDN PCI (also had same problems with ASUSCOM PCI, got the new Billion modem to try and sort the problem)

Formatted the computer, so its a very basic running version of Win2KPRO.

I had thought it was a virus/spyware hogging the bandwidth, but that is not a runner given the fresh install of the PC.

Tried on both Eircom and Oceanfree ISP's.

    edit
Just as I was about to leave this page (I had other browser windows open at the time trying in vain to load some pages) I got a svchost.exe error. I cant believe that a virus got to me in the last hour or so of browsing the net, so is that error linked somehow to my internet slowness ?

    Some other info :

While I was browsing boards.ie and uploading a file to my webspace a window popped up out of no place, something along the lines of

"Im-tips.net", with some info for me on how to make money etc etc. Has anyone heard of this ?

I'm at my wits end on this. I was hoping to be running back to normal when I installed the isdn modem after the format but its still fubar. Surely its an Eircom problem at this stage (the division that installed the isdn box) ? What else can I look at to try and fix the problem. The way it is now I may as well be on bloody 56k :(

    Hi;
I'm not an expert so here are my thoughts based on what you said: )

Hmm it could be a line fault if your having problems with two ISPs; though all ISDN problems i've ever heard of are on the ISP's end.

I doubt buying another modem will help though i believe Eicom ISDN modems seem to make the best out of ISDN connections?

Hmmm i don't think svchost.exe is a virus or anything undesirable...

As for that money making spam message you received; i'm almost entirely sure that some spammer used the messaging system built into 2K / XP to get to you. I highly recommend getting a firewall up asap; should solve that problem and secure your PC against the majority of common hacker attacks. There's a range of quality, free ones available so just spend a little time reading up on them to find which one suits you the best. And definetly get some anti-virus protection! Hackers are continually refining their tools you'd be surprised at just what they can do:ninja: .. don't want to get caught with no defenses ready...;)

Have you tried optimising your MTU; RWIN; TTL settings? Here's a little article that'll introduce you to it if you haven't played around with the stuff before.

    Good Luck ;)

svchost.exe usually runs away merrily in the background. When it starts showing up as an error message then blaster is a suspect - see

    http://www.sophos.com/support/disinfection/blastera.html

A wee cleanup might be handy - download the removal tools and ms patches (prob need to do it on another pc) and patch the machine...
