Hi Guys I am new to fishing as are my buddies, we are generally hunters.

We are thinking of organizing a weekend away to somewhere on the shannon, maybe Roscommon etc.

Now we would like to find out the following:

    1. Can you rent rods, tackle and get bait anywhere in Ireland not necassrily the above.

    2. Do we need a fishing license, we are novices and would be our first venture.

    3. Is there anywhere that you can camp legally and also fish and have a nice pub for the evenings close by.

    4. If we were to buy rods and tackle what would a good beginners setup and cost.

We were thinking of the August Bank Holiday Weekend and would be between 5 and 6 of us in two cars.

Any help would be much appreciated...We missed the Lidl offer

Bait you should be able to get handy enough depending on where you go,
you do need a permit to fish in the shannon region now and you should be able to get this from the bait supplier, as regards buying tackle visit a good tackle dealer and spend as much as you can afford because cheap starter kits are usually rubbish that are only good for propping up your washing line, as for camping/pub/ fishing you should have no bother depending on where you decide to go but make sure you ask the land owner/farmers permission first and you should be grand.

Welcome to the sport.. Something to do in the off season eh ??? I'll try to answer your questions as best a I can.

I'm not too sure about this, but you could check with any of the tackle shops in the area.
Actually on a check try here

Yes for most of the Shannon Region you do.
This page lists the where why and costs of licences for the shannon region.

    3. Is there anywhere that you can camp legally and also fish and have a nice pub for the evenings close by.

Generally asking local land owners never hurts. But again the local tackle shops (close to where you intend to fish) are the best source of information for this.

    4. If we were to buy rods and tackle what would a good beginners setup and cost.

You can spend anything from about €20 to about €2000 and upwards. Generally a good start would be about €100 - €200 euros. Its best to go into a tackle shop and explain to the shopkeeper what you intend to fish for and they will offer you the best advice and best equipment within your price range.

Your local tackleshop is a fantastic source of information.

Ghillies are also another option. These are for want another word, guides that will take you out to a spot and show you where to fish and tell you about the best methods.

    Cheers dudes...

Yeah the hunting in my area has kind of slowed down, basically want the wildlife population to replenish itself as a lot of morons went and killed close to 200 rabbits and several foxes and badgers don't know who but a bloody disgrace...

Most likely business men or young muppets thinking there great and no nothing about conservation.

Fishing is my next venture as you get plenty of quiet time which is great :-)

THanks for all the info :-)
