  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,905 ✭✭✭User45701

It is funny but i dont understand why it matters.

If someone uses the card to buy something they can just track it back to the website/company and then get the shipping adresss

What if it was something intangible that needs no shipping address, like a website or website hosting...? Don't think an I.P could tell the exact location of the user, could it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,276 ✭✭✭damnyanks

Well assumeing they didnt use a proxy they could easily trace it by the IP. The IP is registered to the ISP. The ISP will have records.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,122 ✭✭✭subway_ie

Well they could just go to an internet café, buy some random stuff, send it to random people, or just buy web space, phone credit (for an unregistered RTG phone), or, if you were that way inclined, by him loads of stuff and charge it to his CC.

don't you also need the cardholder's name in order to carry out a transaction ?

I read instructions for credit card fraud somewhere. Not sure where it was, could find it, but if i put it here ill be banned

What a gobsh*te leaving his details like that   Really some people just have not got a clue have they

Well it would be pretty easy to get his name and address through ebay, I have done it before when I wanted to contact some users. But would he not have cancelled this credit card. Does he know that he has put his details here yet?

Anyone got a credit card machine just to try it out then refund it straight away you don't need the 3 digit code

anyway, this could be complete genius...he probably set this up with the intent of people trying to use the card.
Infact I would wager a guess that the card number isnt even his own...how genius to put a cc # of an enemy on the internet for all to see and think it was a mistake ;)

So in the end he is perhaps the smart one and all of who are trying to use the card and getting fried for it are the dumb ones...or even the ones who thought he did it on accident :p hehehe

Or... maybe he's just clueless and stupid, maybe he was half asleep when posting that auction on Ebay.

just was thinking and could someone tell me if this would work...

We see his details and someone uses them to buy, when he see's his card is being used he could buy lots of stuff himself and store it away. Then he reports the use of his card by other people blah blah blah, the person gets in crap or whatever. While our *victim* walks away with a load of free stuff because he just claims ignorance that his card was being used by other people illegally?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,010 ✭✭✭littleninja

In fairness, he could have used something a little bit more practical than his credit card receipt to use to display the watch - the fool!!

As if internet users didn't have enough ways of finding out details without people actually making things easy for them like that!!!

The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the listing.
:D Is it not possible for him to take the page down?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=64355&item=5706364596&rd=1

This is pretty reasurring! Does that happen often/how does it happen i wonder?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,093 ✭✭✭woosaysdan

    what a muppet!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,842 ✭✭✭steveland?

Don't most companies that use cards which require you to know the number to purchase things say that if you give out your details they wont refund anything. They only take action if your details get stolen. As far as i know this is how it works if you give out your pin code on your banklink accounts and stuff...

If this is how it is it's free reign on his card... you could go wild ;)

Maybe that is in fact somebody elses credit card and he wants a good few people (like us!) to start using the card in order to help disguise fraudulent transactions that HE intends to carry out.... As in if there's loads of stuff being shipping all over the gaff it would look alot less suspicious (in terms of himself being incriminated) than if all the stuff was being shipped to his address only...

    Just a thought... :dunno:

Did any of you actually try and contact him and tell him about his mistake?

It could be that someone at eBay noticed the tens of thousands of click-throughs coming to that page in hours!

The pub I worked at used to have the full credit card number and expiration date on the receipts. That's pretty dumb. People just leave their reciepts in ashtrays and stuff.
