I'm flying into Shannon on Friday morning, does anyone have info about what kind of delays i can expect to encounter due to George W's arrival?
All I get from RTE news is that the army has dug trenches and laid razor wire around the perimiter. This doesn't sound promising.

Should look great on the international media... it'll really help to destroy that (mostly American) myth that we're all at war with eash other.

I don't think anybody will actually tell you how long the delays are expected to be... just that you should check in on schedule, or maybe even an hour or so beforehand for any extra security delays.

try www.aaroadwatch.ie - they're very good for daily news traffic updates - not sure about future news updates tho - might be worth a try anyway

There's probably going to be a big difference in the delays on friday than there were on monday... they're saying to leave 4 hours before the departure - it's probably a bit on the safe side, although you wouldn't want to risk turning up late and not getting on your flight.

    just got this in email

Pass this info. on to any relevant people, it may upset any plans for the weekend!
    Traffic arrangements E.U./U.S. Summit 25th and 26th June 2004.

The following traffic arrangements will be in place for the upcoming E.U./U.S. Summit on 25th and 26th June 2004.

The following arrangements will be in place from 3pm Friday 25th June to 3pm Saturday 26th June.

The N18 will be closed between Clonmoney, Shannon and Skehanagh, Clarecastle.

Galway bound traffic will be diverted at the Clonmoney flyover on the Limerick side of Shannon via Sixmilebridge and Tulla. Traffic will rejoin the N18 at Lough Cutra near Gort.

Ennis bound traffic will also be diverted at Clonmoney via Sixmilebridge on the R352 into Ennis.

Traffic travelling from Galway and Ennis will be diverted at Skehanagh, Clarecastle via Quinn and Sixmilebridge. Traffic will rejoin the N18 at Clonmoney.
The following arrangements will be in place from 10pm Thursday 24th June to 3pm Saturday 26th June.

The R458 from the Clare Inn roundabout to Ministers Cross, Newmarket on Fergus will be closed.
Gardai will be on duty and diversion signs will be in place.

Shannon airport will operate as normal on 25th and 26th June. Intending passengers are advised to add an extra 2 hours to their travelling time to allow for any delays. This is in addition to any extra time advised by airlines or tour operators.

    Garda Operation E.U./U.S. Summit 25th and 26th June 2004.

President George. W. Bush arrives with the First Lady at Shannon Airport at 8.15 p.m. on Friday 25th June, 2004 and is scheduled to depart at 3.00 p.m. on Saturday 26th June, 2004.

The security operation, which has been put in place, is to ensure the safety of all persons attending the summit and in particular the President.

A number of protests are planned to take place during the course of the event both in Dublin and Shannon itself. The Gardaí will afford every facility to protest groups during this time. Every person has a right to protest peacefully within the law and it is only when people engage in criminal activity that An Garda Síochána have to deal with the situation. In this regard the Gardaí are determined to prevent criminality and public disorder and will ensure a prompt and effective response.

Special arrangements have been put in place for residents, employees and visitors to the Shannon area during this time but because of the extensive security operation it is envisaged that ordinary members of the public may experience some delays. This is unavoidable and regrettable.

I know, it's the biggest joke. Bertie and McDowell should step down for this one. They pretty much just bent over and let Bush ram them up the anus.

I find it quite ironic the a country (America) who's constitution states ".....all men are created equal...." , allows so much time and resources and status to be given to one man. The life of the president is more important than any other person in the U.S. Where's the sanity in that?

(yes, I know it's the wrong board)

    Sweet mother mary.

I'm just off the phone with that bird who puts up with me (she's in Galway) and we kind of said that we'd not see each other till later in the weekend (if at all) because of the shenanigans over the Shrub Junior visit. The above sounds even worse than I heard at the start of the week and I'm damned if I'm going to Galway through Portumna[1] just to alleviate in a nonsensical way my sense of righteous indignation at having to be marginally diverted for what looks like thirty miles because of some movie star[2] with a big red button blowing into Clare's answer to Ballymun for a cup of tea with Drumcondra Boi. (I'd rather go around Lough Derg than be stuck behind a tractor for thirty miles on a cattle track. I'd feel better and soak up some local culture)

No nice pears from that fruit & veg shop near Dunnes on the Headford road till Saturday or Sunday for me then. Boo.

I suppose I could go and protest then seeing I have the free time. Anyone on for standing outside Shannon all dressed in black with a few signs that say "Careful Now" and "Down With This Sort Of Thing!" then? Or even "Down with Shrubs, Up with Skirts"?

[1]I suppose I could always go through Killaloe but that mightn't annoy me enough
[2]Fahrenheit 911. Everyone wants to be in movies these days. The Lesser Shrub is lucky that anyone wants to film him at all, begorrah

Ah but they're only created equal(ly[1], you illiterate funsters of founding fathers). After that you only get into Yale if Poppy has enough greenbacks:)

(I know it's the wrong board too. N'er mind, someone will linkah if anyone gets indignant enough)

[1]I could be wrong with the whole grammar thing. Depends what they meant. And it gets a little confusing with the whole "slavery OK till 1860ish" thing
