I-Robot versus the nerd...

the nerd calls all film goers to arms against the disgraceful mis-use of the science fiction classic I-Robot...

or so the general viewer would see this. Personnally i think the guy has a good point, there have been adaptations that have been poor (Queen of the damned *shudder*) and then there have been adaptations that have changed the message of the book (Starship troopers) But I-robot seems to have taken the idea of adaptation to a whole new low. Even the words Inspired by would be too good for the crime that has been commited...

but thats only because of the mis-use of the title, for all i know it *could* be a good film...but it hasnt had a good start.

There's a Japanese trailer going around that gives a much better impression of what the film will be like. I, Robot to my knowledge is a collection of short stories, so a direct adaptation would be difficult. There's also a five minute conversation with the director where he talks about his intentions with it.

There's a lot of internet nerds who are completely appalled by the idea of Will Smith being in an Asimov adaptation, but **** it, I think it looks like great fun.

I was under the impression that this movie was not an adaption of the Asimov adaptation book but merly shared the same title?

Its not an adaptation. It just takes the name, and brutally rapes the 3 laws, and every concept in asimovs fiction. It more or less embodies the frankenstein concept

I was under the impression that nobody actually knew how it handled the three laws and were just theorising based on what appears in the trailer. I suggest you download the two clips I mentioned above...

    Japanese trailer

I can't find the clip with Alex Proyas, I think it's somewhere on the I Robot website, but it might be hosted at Apple. My connection is being slow tonight so I can't look for it.

You know, I really like Alex Proyas as a director, but I Robot just looks downright plain crap.

But did anyone else know that the original story 'I Robot' was not an Asimov story, but was written over 10 years before Asimov's "I Robot" by Eando Binder, and dealt with the story of a Robot who supposedly murdered his creator, and stood trial.

So the film could technically have absolutely NO link to Asimov, or the laws of robots and still be totally valid. Considering the theme of the film, I don't see why on earth they're crediting Asimov at all!?

    I'd recommend Binder's I Robot to everyone, it's a great story altogether.

Another usefull tit-bit of information is that Eando Binder's name is pronounced "Bender" and hence, Bender the robot in Futurama.

I remember seeing an outer limits episode with the exact same story about five years ago. I guess it was based on the I, robot story.

    Aye it was!
With Leonard Nemoy in it, wasn't it?

I don't remember. I remember it being a good episode, anyway.

similar story in the animatrix about the origin of the matrix...

But it uses names of characters from asimov's story in the film (if you look at link and at credits in imdb)

Someone wrote a screenplay back in 1977 that Asimov was quite impressed with.

If you read the article you'll see that this particular film was originally to be called "Hardwired" and nothing in common with Asimovs original book, except that they both happend to involve robots on some level.

The director started referring to the film as 'I, Robot' when it was in the early stages of development. Then, in a stroke of luck for this director, Fox bought up all the rights to the name and characters 2 years ago.

I think this is the main issue the author is taking with this film; not some random 'nerd' being precious about his book...since the film isn't really an adaptation to speak of, its just taking some (bad, presumably) script about robots going mental, filing the serial numbers off and calling it 'I, Robot'.

Anyway, the trailer makes it look like a bad rip off of Minority Report with some of will smiths trademark humour thrown in.

at least they could have tried to design better robots! and used a little less CGI!

Stan Winston must be so mad at all this CGI!

i-robot sucks, according to some americans who have seen it that i know. there's probably a leak out there somewhere.

the original stories didn't involve any robot murder, from what i've been told. that or there was no robot uprising. something to that effect. the film is also using the matrix revolutions soundtrack. most people wont care but i like to hear a good original soundtrack to acompany a film.

also, will smith is in it.

It's not at all unusual for a film trailer to feature temp music from other films. Braveheart's music has been used in dozens of trailers, and you may remember the Requiem for a Dream theme used in the Two Towers trailer.

Yeah, I remember the theme music from the fugitive being used in a ton of trailers.
