Hi All, after recently making the fatal mistake of purchasing a pc in PCWorld 2 months ago, I've found myself having to return a pc that doesn't work. Having got a blunt refusal to a refund (something about a 28 day return policy which incidentally is not written on your receipt or anywhere else when you buy), the only option they're giving me is to exchange the pc (which after testing they've admitted is faulty through no fault of mine), for another one. After looking through what they have with gaming in mind the only one they have that seems to have something above the ATI 9200 is what they call their own brand, Advent which has the nVidia GeForce FX5600 256mb. Has anyone got this graphics card and if so could you let me know what it's like as I've had mixed reports. The type of games I want to play would be along the lines of Far Cry & HL2 when it's released.
My personal choice of course would be just to get a complete refund and this time take the time and effort to either build my own or find somewhere else that doesn't dick you around so much. Any advice on that also appreciated, already told them about statutory rights and such, might as well have been speaking a different language for all the impact it made.

    Cheers

what is wrong with it? And when did you first try to return it. If you kick up enough fuss about your consumer rights etc, i'm sure they will geive money back. If the comptuer was unfit for the purpose it was sold, its illegal for them to not give you the choice of a full refund.

That particular series of graphics cards was a disaster for Nvidia, and should be avoided. At the moment, a 9800pro is the sweet spot for price/performance. the 9600 pro would be the buget version, costing only about 100eur now.

But after 30 days you run into some problems with that. They're not normally obliged to offer a full refund after 30 days, only a repair/replacement/store credit. If you pushed the issue, they'd probably end up having to give you the refund though.

Appparently (according to their tech support who tested it), the graphics card (ati 9200) is knackered, corrupted is the word he used which I take to mean faulty. I think there was other things wrong in general but he said that's as far as he tested, didn't check for anything else. I've been calling about problems with the pc since I got it, each time I'd be told to try one thing or another, some of which helped for a while. Unfortunately I just didn't have time to go in with it, first free weekend was the one just gone, first time I also heard of their 28 day return policy. Seems to make no difference that I called on no less than 6 occasions to them and their support helpline in the UK, even though they should have those calls logged as well inside their 28 days. I've been told there was no proof there was anything wrong with the machine as I didn't bring it in, which I think is just a convenient cop out as it's blindly obvious that between my calls and what the tech support found, there was something very worng with it. I've spoken with Consumer Rights Ireland and they said the 28 day policy means f'all as far as the Sale of Goods Act is concerned. Just wanted to know if I got that other machine with the GeForce card would I be saving myself from having to threaten these gypsies with the small claims court!

Cheers for the response on the card, yeah thats what I was thinking myself, read that it seemed to be a hasty release more in response to competition than genuine perfomance improvement.

As it looks like they've got absolutely nothing that I want reckon I've no option other than the threat of legal action, just how I like to spend my weekends ;) .

Anyway, wish me luck against the man!

    Later
