    Have you read the manual?

What exactly are you having trouble with?

ya. i'm just trying to get it set-up.
    looking for any alternatives aswell.
with looking around I seen stuff about Coyote linux based firewall on a floppy disk???
using something like this on my 500mhz pc could be an idea. it has w2k and i don't want to wipe it. so the floppy boot-up could be good.

the manual says that when you set-up smoothwall and reboot that the web server will be running. nut what is the craic with the login? have gone into setup and root, fair enough. what do I do next? my other machines do get their ips and can ping the firewall but I can't see the webserver.

you can configure it from a web brower just put in the ip address and port you set it too on an another machine and do it that way.

ya i think they both use the same idea.
the problem with the smoothwall was i couldn't get the webserver going.

If there are less than 5 users on the inside have a look at gnatbox lite - has a web interface.

Mr. Hand, please go to your nearest hardware store and purchase some lumber, some nails and a hammer and build yourself a nice bridge.
Once you've done that please feel free to have a stroll over it.

smoothwall express comes with a basic installation pdf and i have read this thoroughly.

I am as much looking for alternative to the likes of smoothwall as i am looking for help with setting it up.

    thank you

IIRC Smoothwall runs its https webserver on port 441 (check the manual to make sure), so you should be able to access it through:

    https://192.168.0.1:441

assuming it has set its own IP to 192.168.0.1. You might have to do this from one of the machines on the 'Green' (internal net) interface.

ya, tried that. it's in the manual

what happens is when i reboot the firewall, i get a login prompt.
can get into 'setup' and 'root' but can't get into 'admin'?
or is that what i should be doing?

and yes i have tried and retried multiple logins/passwords...

    any ideas?
