European Cup - Group C - What happens if....?

Please move this thread to the soccer boards, for some reason I cannot post there.

I read many people are wondering what should happen in Group C of the European cup to have the Italians/Swedish/Danish through to the second stage, find the answer below.

    This is the current situation:

Sweden 4 Points --- they scored 6 goals, they got 1 against
Denmark 4 Points --- they scored 2 goals, they got 0 against
Italy 2 Points --- they scored 1 goals, they got 1 against
Bulgaria 0 Points --- they scored 0 goals, they got 7 against

Assuming that Italy wins against Bulgaria, then they will go through on condition that the match between Sweden and Denmark will not finish with a draw.
A draw in the Sweden-Denmark would mean that we would need to look at the goal difference in the DIRECT matches between these 3 teams ONLY (they would be all at 5 points).
Beacause they all draw against each other, then the number of goal scored would take precendence against the number of goal received.
Therefore if Sweden-Denmark finish 0-0 then Sweden and Italy will go through.
If Sweden-Denmark finish 2-2 then Sweden and Denmark will go through, even if Italy beat Bulgaria by 80 goals, this is because the total goal scored in the direct matches between the teams with the same points take precedence on the goal difference in the group.

The situation gets more complicated if the match Between Sweden and Denmark finishes 1-1, in the case to go through Italy will need to win by 2 goals against Bulgaria (not 3!). A 2-0 to Italy against Bulgaria will be enough to go through because they would have exactly the same goal difference as Denmark (3 scored, 1 received) but a better UEFA coefficent (2.31 against 2.05 of Denmark).

If you want to post you need to become a member, go to the soccer access sub-board. You'll need someone who will sponser you.

To answer you question if the scandis play a draw of 2-2 or better they both go through (stitch-up anyone?!)

The new arrangement is to filter out troublemakers.
