want an SG

i want a gibson SG standard quite badly and am looking for advice on the cheapest way to get one. new in waltons they are 2,000 (right?), new from musictechnology.ie/thomann they are about 1,400, new from music123.com they are about €900 + shipping and duty (and hassle, so you've told me to believe)...
but i'd really like an old one, not that i know much (anything?) about guitars but in my limited experience older stuff is better and keeps its value.
i've seen a sixties SG in blackrock (louth) for 1,600 and they've got a 70s one in cork (cant remember the name of the shop) for 1,300. anyone got any ideas where i could possibly pick one up cheaper? would i be as well to find a cheap second hand special and have it done up? would i be better looking abroad (britain, netherlands)? any advice much appriciated...

also, anyone know a place that does affordable second hand 4X12s? seems like a few years ago they were all over the place at around £250 but now they are rare and more expensive ... new ones for €900+ in music maker, what a rip off...

    thanx in advance

Yep, a mate of mine bought a Les Paul from him a coupla months ago. He's 100% the real deal. Completely a good bloke.

What are the charges like as regards VAT and Customs? Some very interesting stuff on there.

    Import duty 6%
    VAT 20 %

This should be calculated on the value of the instrument as declared to the courier.

Roughly, with everything taken into account, what you pay in $$$ is about what you'll pay in €€€ (ie, if it's $1300 you'll pay about €1300 total)

    Still well worth it.

thanx a million for posting that link... looks to be more than a few other total bargains dotted around the page if anyone's interested... he says shipping to ireland is $70 (slow) and $150 (fast) FYI.

Chek here: http://www.regentguitars.co.uk/ £550 inc VAT for a Gibson SG Faded or Platinum. £25 shipping. Sounds good to me and sounds quite a lot cheaper than €1400 ;) Looks like a really quality site too.

u can get those for around €750 via thomann/musictechnology.ie which is about the same... i guess thats the standard net, you'd wonder about the heads buying them for €1,200 in waltons alright.

If I ordered something from Thomann's site, would I encounter any shipping issues? I'm not up to speed on this but I am curious (: Where is it shipped from, would it be quicker ordering it from regentguitars?

Sorry to half hijack your thread but thanks anyway (:

Depends on the carrier (UPS, Fedex, etc) they'd all be put on a plane so distance isn't really an issue in Europe.

After drooling around that site for a while I started thinking I might sell the Ibanez:( and get.... a gorgeous SG standard for Eu800!! :D Anyone want to tell me I'll never regret it? I'd probably be able to sell it for over a grand here if I didn't like it anyway wouldn't I?

Sell the Ibanez and get a real Les Paul :)

In fairness, Chris's site is just full of bargains. There's a USA 80's HM strat for $399, just cos it's pink and very very 80's. It's a fabulous guitar though. Worth double at least over here.

Yeah it's great. I might look into the Les Paul but at the moment I do like the look/price of that SG. There's no LP Standard on that site though. Any idea what one would cost when they do come in?

dont mean to wreck the buzz here but that SG standard is on hold for someone it seems...

Depends on age/condition. The one my mate got was mint from 1999 in iced tea burst (which seems to be a limited finish, though I'm not sure about that) and it cost $1300. Worth every cent though.

The SG standard is on hold, but the walnut one is the 1973 Glbson SG II ... which hasn't any on-hold info.
