My boyfriend and I have recently broken up and I'm lost. During the college year I had my friends around me and lots to do in college, and I had loads of plans for me and the boyfriend for the summer-I was so excited, I thought I had a great summer ahead of me!. Unfortunately it's all now been ruined and I'm at a loss. I have very few friends at home and most of the people I know from college are miles away now it's the summer.
I need to get some sort of social life together.
I want to meet new people, get out there, and enjoy myself, cos September is a long way away and I've had enough crap summers.
I'm finding it difficult to get a job, I can't see myself going out clubbing or pubbing by myself, so I need other ways of meeting new people and hopefully potential boyfriends.
I'm really annoyed that this happened when it did cos had it been during the college year I would've had plenty to do to fill my time!

    Has anyone any suggestions?

Can you afford to go travelling? You'd meet loads of people if you went backpacking around Europe for a bit.

Or maybe you could go to one of the boards.ie events!

Much as I'd love to,I'm afraid there's no way on earth I could afford to go travelling at the minute! I know things will be better once I'm back in college but that's a long time away.

Hmm, maybe hang around places where you're likely to meet people who have similar interests to you and try to get into a conversation with them. Like, if you're into books, hang around a bookstore and try to get talking to ppl who look interesting - it sounds weird I know, but what have you got to lose? Also, look out for free music and arts festivals that might be on in your are over the summer.

are you into sports? its a great way to meet ppl, for instance im in a strange country away from my friends but Im beginning to get to know ppl through judo and aikido. Now it doesn't have to be a sport where the objective is to pummel your opponent into the ground, just make sure its a club where you interact with ppl, or you can join some kind of society like drama or join a bookclub.

Anyway theres nothing wrong with only having a few friends to go out with, I prefer it that way

Don't be fretting about not having anything to do relax a while it is your summer break after all. If you really wanted a job you could get one sounds like you couldn't be arsed if that is so don't complain about not being able to afford to do anything. I'm sorry for this sounding like a lecture but its only a couple of months untill you will be back at college.

Put more energy into the job hunt. You'll almost always end up working with a few people you get on with.

Definetely start with looking for a job, get into a hobbie of some kind and go to things to do with the hobby-easiest way!

    Where are you from?

    I'm from Dublin.

It's not that I'm lazy looking for a job-it's just that the majority of places require experience that I don't have.

I just want to get my life together. I was foolish to become too dependent on the boyfriend, it wasn't a conscious decision, it happened gradually.

    Relax

You've probably had a rough college year. Go to some agencies where you can get temp work - this is a fantastic way to get experience. Also you could take a lower paid job in your career area (not sure what it is) and do some type of volunteer work to build up some experience.

As for meeting people - its hard, I have just moved to belfast and I am really struggling but what has been nice is i try to say hello to the people on my street when I am walking to work and in an internet cafe where I check my e-mail. After just over a week the guys in the internet cafe are saying hi and asking how my day was. Those simple interactions are the best place to start.
