i came back to my pc last night to find the power still on but the monitor off. moving the mouse or pressing keys didnt work as i thought it was in standby so i powered off. today i turned it on to find it wont do anything. at all.
i have a d bracket (diagnostic leds) which just displays:
    R R
    G G
This apparently corresponds to 'initializing hard drive controller'. apart from this ive nothing to go on. shes as dead as a doornail.

    Any ideas?

    thanks.

    Is it POST'ing at all?

If not it could be any number of things, RAM, PSU etc...

For starters open the case and clear the BIOS using the jumpper. Then start.

    Its located beside the battery.

    Thanks JoePC

excuse my ignorance but what is posting?

It makes the usual noises for the first say 3 or 4 seconds then......nothing.

i'll clear the BIOS in the meantime.

    thanks.

POST = Power on self test

Its when the PC starts and displays the screen with details about the components or just a splash screen e.g. Dell logo,

What happened when you cleared the cmos & booted?

    Thanks JoePC

ok posting, got it. I cant tell cos the monitor wont switch on. but it make the usual sounds, (cd drive light filckers, HDD lights on) i cleared the bios but its the same story. but u say CMOS? (bios/cmos? tomaytoes/tomatoes?)

truth is, i put the pc together myself which was kinda a baptism of fire. Its a cheap MSI board, 14 months old. maybe the mystery is solved then? has probably just died?

anyway, i dont mind getting a new mobo and processor but
    a. i'd like to be sure it isnt something simple
    b. i need to get stuff off it!!!

    thanks joepc

Are you sure it isn't just a dead monitor?
