Second Sky+ box with just the one subscription

Is it possible to have a second Sky+ dish and box in a different house, so that I can swap the viewing card betwen boxes?

If not, are there any issues involved with physically bringing the box and card with me to the other location, where there is already a dish installed? Will there be any issues with the phone connection doing this?

Sorry for the basic questions, I'm fairly new to Sky!

    Robbie

I don't think the viewing cards can be swapped as I would imagine the recording functionality is tied to a specific card and box.

Regarding physically bringing the box and card then that should be fine as long as the dish in both locations have two feeds for the Sky+ box (a regular Sky dish only has one feed).

The card will unscramble the Family Pack (excluding RTE1& NET2) on any box either Sky+ or Digibox, but Premium Channels are tied to card and a specific box,as are RTE.

I have no idea if the Sky+ features are card only or card & box dependant.

At a guess I would say they are tied to the box.

    incorrect

PK could you answer questions only when you are sure of the answers otherwise you are not being helpfull to the forum.
Your answer is incorrect and given with such certainty too which is very unfair to the users here when it is incorrect.

It's gas how people without two sky plus boxes assume they know the answer to a question as if they have second sight or something.

I have 2 sky plus boxes and I can tell you that when you switch the card to the other sky plus box, live pausing and recording both work

You can even store the recorded programme for anytime that you have the card with the active skyplus sub in that wrong sky plus box.
Obviously you cannot dual record or watch another channel whilst theres only one lnb feed to your second sky plus box.

    Rubbish.

You can disconnect a phone line anytime. Do it anytime a storm in the area or you are away.

Probabily the phone can be disconnected several weeks. The box "retries". It is only if in a month period that a non-connecting box is "flagged".

No viewing or recording functionallity depends on phone line, only pay for Play, PPV, sending messages, buying services and "voting". I personally never intend to use Sky Box for any of these.

If you are making a long term visit to an alternate location, Sky are quite happy to change a card to a different box or "register" a box at a different phone number.

For short visits it doesn't matter. Card works for non-primium channels, and phone doesn't need connect.

Thanks for the replies. Earthman, that was exactly the answer I was looking for, from someone who has real experience with the two Sky+ boxes. The second location does have two feeds from the LNB, so I´ll set about getting myself the second Sky+ box. Do you mind me asking where you got your second box from? Where would you recommend? :)

Watty, you mention that the card works for non-premium channels. Does that mean I´ll get ONLY non-premium channels with my card on the second box? Earthman, maybe you could confirm if you can get the premium channels on your second box.

    Many thanks,

    Robbie

One of them from dixons and one of them from Tony at Sattelite dot ie ( see bricks and mortar sticky )
Price is the same everywhere afaik.

Watty is correct, the card swap will only authorise family pack channels irrespective of your sub( ie no Sports or movies on the unmarried box ) and you will not have RTÉ 1 and N2 as they are tied to a specific box.
You will have TV3 and TG4 though

Ok thats great, thanks for the clarification. I´ll probably just end up moving the box from one location to the other.

    Cheers for the help,

    Robbie

ok, but be carefull as the sky plus box contains a sensitive hard drive.
It's not meant for too much dragging around the place.
If you are going to be doing that it would be a good idea to use the foam packaging and the outer box it came in.

If you take a card out of a normal sky digibox, and insert it into a sky+ box, will the recording features work then? Can you still view all of the premium channels (Sports, Movies etc.) without phoning sky?

The question related specifically to two sky plus boxes.
Of course if you do not have sky plus activated on your card, because it's from an ordinary digibox, it doesn't magically have sky plus features when you put it unmarried into another sky plus box.

The point is if the sky plus features are activated in one sky plus box, you can take that card and put it into a different sky plus box and you will still be able to record and live pause any channel that you can view via the EPG.
In the case of an Irish card that would include family pack channels only excluding RTÉ one and N2.
