alternative to dvd shrink

im trying to backup a dvd with a small scratch on it. i have all the files ripped to the HDD except for 1 vob file which i only have about 1/2 of(about 450 out of 1gb). the rest of the disc plays fine when playing from the HDD , it just skips over the missed part. problem being that now it needs to be shrunk and dvd shrink wont see it as a full disc image to actually shrink it.

ive tryed subbing in another vob from somewhere and renaming it to the suspect file to try and fool it into thinking it had all the files but alas it didnt work.

so does anyone know of similar programs, but maybe ones which will just compress individual vob files. or else maybe one of the utilites to split it across 2 discs if nothing else works. can anyone reccommend one of those.

how are you getting the files to your computer? Trying grabbing dvd decryptor and using that to copy em over, it should continue regardless of read errors.

BTW: A better quality program for copying DVD's is "DVD Rebuilder". It uses a MUCH better quality encoder, as compared to the transcoders in most programs such as DVD shrink.

If you want quality, use Rebuilder+CCE, if you want speed, Shrink is the best. I can do 2.5 DVD's overnight with DVD Rebuilde + CCE.

ill give it a try but its a cyclic redundancy check error that causes the crash so i doubt any prog will get the missing data.

maybe i didnt explain it the best in my original post but i already have ripped the files(bar 1/1 of 1) using dvd decryptor so my problem lyes more with shrinking the files i have rather than not being able to get the missing one.

You need to use either VobEdit or IfoEdit, i can't remember which.
That way you can edit out the corrupt file and rewrite it so that it doesn't look for it.
    Is that what you mean?

You'll find guides for VobEdit and IfoEdit on www.doom9.org

kind of. like i said i have 1/2 of the file and that plays fine so i want to keep that in the dvd when i burn it. that tool might allow me to edit the ifo's and then shrink the remaining ones and then insert the 1/2 one back into the final version. ill give it a shot.

what could be missig part be from? Is it part of the main movie VOB files, or part of the extras? If its main movie, then don't bother trying to compress.

Since i've never had this problem i can't really give anything more than possibilities. I think that DVD Rebuilder /might/ be able to help. I believe it will be able to recompress it, even with half the file missing. check out the www.doom9.org forums for the DVD Rebuilder forum, and read up there.

its a tv series dvd, and im only missing 1/2 of 1 episode which is fine if i can get the rest of the dvd to copy. id like to back this up now though in case the original gets any worse.

i had a good look over on doom9 and found a couple of tools which ill have a go with tonight. thanks lads.

I used to swear by DVD Shrink and I have DVD2One,Intervideo DVD Copy,MovieJack and Nero Recode.
After a while I used Clone DVD.
Its a superb piece of software.
Rips and shrinks DVD's in around 20-25 mins approx 50-100% faster than DVD Shrink and with great results.
After using all of the rest I think Clone DVD is the best.

the problem ive found with clone dvd is that it wont rip anything with protection, so its useless for around 99% of dvds.

DVD Decryptor-> rip to harddrive -> clone DVD. Its faster that way (or at least it was in DVD Shrink if you were using Deep analysis).

For ripping dvd's the best tool Ive used is ImTOO DVD Ripper. I like the interface and it rips really quickly. For me it rips at 48 frames per second
