Paul O'Grady is set to join emmerdale

LILY Savage star Paul O'Grady is to join ITV soap Emmerdale as a gay member of the infamous Dingle family.

Yorkshire Television confirmed today that soap chiefs are in talks with the 49-year-old comic.

They say O'Grady, who shot to fame as blonde drag queen Lily Savage in the late 1990s, is poised to sign a contract to join the programme in a role which could be long-term.

He will join the tough but zany Dingle family in the comedy role in the next six months.

A Yorkshire TV spokeswoman said: "We are speaking with the star about the terms of how he may join us.

"He has been hinting at it throughout the Soap Awards, which he presented, and we think it will become a reality."

O'Grady has expressed interest in joining soapland for some time and is a fan of Emmerdale.

Emmerdale actress and friend of O'Grady, Sherrie Hewson, who recently made her debut in the soap as loud-mouth Lesley Meredith, is excited about the deal.

"Paul is a big mate of mine, I have my fingers crossed."

It is rumoured that the pair are flat-hunting in Leeds.

Emmerdale chiefs want to spice up the soap by putting the camp actor in with the hilbilly Dingle family, headed by Zak.

The spokeswoman added: "It is down to timing. We are waiting for a moment when Paul O'Grady's diary is clear, so he can do some filming. It should be good TV and a welcome addition to the soap."

O'Grady's role in the soap would not be his first stab at acting, although his recent BBC sitcom, Eyes Down, received mixed reviews.

Among his other achievements are walk-on parts in the Bill and reviving the BBC quiz show Blankety Blank
