Any chance the guitar virtuosos of good ol' boards.ie can help out a fellow guitarist?

I've been playing by myself, lessonless, for about 3 years now, and played classical guitar for about 4 years before that. In that time, i've learned a bit, can play a bit, and want to play a whole lot more!

    At the moment,
-My music theory isnt too bad
-I'm comfortable with about 3 minor pentatonic shapes; 2 3-note-per-string major shapes; all open shape chords, many bar chords (not those crazy b7, dim, aug4 madness tho)
-Can play a few fast things, examples of what i think are the "best" things i play are almost all master of puppets and first half of solo, intro to ship of fools by malensteen, thunderstruck intro (easy enough, but sounds class), the odd solo here and there, some cool riffs etc

    My problems include
-any lead i play sounds like crap with any great speed
-my "improvisation" skills are pretty crap, and the "pentatonic scale up, down and mixed up a bit" solos are getting old

I've tried tracking down lessons but teachers seem to be missing from this part the country.

At the end of the day, I'd like to know would ye have any ideas
    -what i should learn
-examples of practise regimes that ACTUALLY WORK (sitting down with a sheet of scales doesn't work for me at all, unless i have a specific plan i give up :( )
    -any other helpful advice

Thanks in advance, and apologies if this sounds like im whinging about not being able to play well, it more i'm really want to play well and annoyed i cant figure out the right way of accomplishing this!

I know I'm not a guitarist, but it does apply to all instruments really - you need to sit down with said instrument and just sit down and play something off the top of your head...you strum a chord or 2 and go from there, it's a big learning curve and helps a serious amount in band situations. Even start off a song you know and then play around with it, add, remove or change a few things.
It's all fine and dandy to be technical, but at the end of the day inspiration and improv are as, if not more important than it.

Get yourself a metronome to hone your speeed and accuracy for leads. Learn to play without any tension in your hands.
As for improvisation, you could get start doing some recording on your computer, putting down rythym tracks and soloing over them.
