my friend is trying to install some new ram into this 8100. it currently has 2 * 64mb sticks of rdram and he got another 128mb and there is for slots on the system.

for a start he has to unhinge the psu to get at the ram slots and the empty ram slots seem to be filled with to kind a covers he mentioned, whats up with this?

he removed one of these covers and installed the ram but on booting he now gets no signal from the monitor anyone know what the problem is here?

also on removal of the ram but leaving the cover off the empty ram slot he still gets no signal.

    help appreciated

I'm nearly sure the old RDRAM used in the D 8100 has to be in pairs. I've the same system.

(The old versions were 16bit hence 2*16 = 32 bit. Whereas the newer RDRAM can be used individually as they're 32bit).

So if your friend has only bought 1*128mb then he's in trouble, and should either fork out for another 128mb of the same memory, or send it back and get 2* 64 mb sticks. (preferably buy the extra 128mb)

I also think that the RDRAM slots can't be empty, hence the blank "covers" on the spare 2 slots.

The D8100 can't use the single RDRAM sticks, only the pairs.

Correct me if I'm wrong anyone....

Btw where did he buy the RDRAM?

ok thanks, he bought it from www.shop4memory.com who said it would be ok i think

his dell 8100 is an old one with a 1.4Ghz p4. i don't know anything about the 16 versus 32 myself.

the trouble is now thought even with the original 2*64 sticks back in their slots and the covers back on he is still getting the no signal message from his monitor

    any ideas?

he found the problem he hadn't inserted one of the covers back properly, grand stuff folks thanks for the info.

he needs more than 256mb anyway so thats a good incentive for him

The 4 slots together form a circut allowing the memory to function on a quad-pumped bus. Make sure that the 2 64MB chips are next to each other, and that the other 2 slots are filled with the dummy chips faced the correct way. If that doesn't work, then I assume he's nudged something else in there which is causing the monitor not to receive a signal.
