    Not sure if this is the correct forum for this, feel free to move it.

    I've been reading a lot about doping and anabolic steroids and their side effects. Forgive the long winded post :) I've focused mainly on anabolic steroids.

    Anabolic steroids are effective in enhancing athletic performance. The trade off, however, is the occurrence of adverse side effects which can jeopardize health. Since anabolic steroids have effects on several organ systems, a myriad of side effects can be found. In general, the orally administered anabolic steroids have more adverse effects than parenterally administered anabolic steroids. In addition, the type of anabolic steroid is not only important for the advantageous effects, but also for the adverse effects. Especially the anabolic steroids containing a 17-alkyl group have potentially more adverse affects, in particular to the liver. One of the problems with athletes, in particular strength athletes and bodybuilders, is the use of oral and parenteral anabolic steroids at the same time ("stacking"), and in dosages which may be several (up to 40 times) the recommended therapeutic dosage. The frequency and severity of side effects is quite variable. It depends on several factors such anabolic steroids type of drug, dosage, duration of use and the individual sensitivity and response

    Some side effects include;
    In Males
    An increase in sexual desire yet occurances erectile dysfunction are also increased.
    Breast formation in males

    In Females
    Increased facial hair growth
    Acne
    Male pattern baldness
    Breast atrophy

    There are also many psychological side effects associated with anabolic steroids including increased agressiveness, sleeping disorders, paranoia and hallucinations.

    The majority of these side effects are irreversible yet the use of anabolic steroids is still an issue which dominates world sport at every level.

    Why in the pursuit of a medal will people willingly put their physical and mental well being through such abuse?

    Will the development of designer drugs put an end to such things?

    Will the use of steroids ever become a thing of the past or as long as medicine/science continues to develop things to enhance performance will there be a demand for it?

    What can anti-doping agencies do to keep ahead of the development of new designer drugs?
