New US charter service from Cork/Shannon

    April 14, 2004 19:30
Tourism Ireland says the start of a new charter air service between Shannon and Cork to the US will add important additional transatlantic seat capacity at a time when US visitor traffic to Ireland is rising sharply.

Hammond Tours, a US tour operator, has joined with Ryan International Airlines to offer a charter air service between Boston and Shannon and between New York and Cork and Shannon.

Non-stop flights from New York to Shannon will operate every Thursday and Saturday between June 24 and September 11. A non-stop service from Cork to New York will start on June 23 and operate until September 8, departing every Wednesday. This is a first for the airport.

A Boston-Shannon service will also be operated on Friday and Sundays from June 25 until September 12.

'The additional capacity during the peak season will play an important role as we strive to bring visitor numbers back to those achieved in 2000 - a record breaking year for US visitor numbers to Ireland,' said Jim McGuigan, Executive Vice President North America for Tourism Ireland.

'We are witnessing a sharp upturn in the level of enquiries and bookings from the US market for tourism travel to Ireland this year. The extra lift provided by this new service is both timely and welcome', he added.
