Right , im just after getting a new hard drive 160gig and I want to use it for media and the like while keeping my present one (if i can fix it) for the OS's i want to istall

I ahve windows Xp and my current hard drive is 80 gig's however I want to install linux (thinking mandrake 10 but not sure yet) with a 15/20 gig partition and then have Xp use the rest with my other hardrive using media and other important files.

Can I move my Hard drive content onto the new one, then use a program like partiton magic to partition my current hard drive and then just delete the os on the new hard drive, does this sound right

I ve never done anything like this before and dont really want to feck things up

You can copy the partition from your old disk to the new one with partition magic, this is a fast and easy was of just getting your data across.

If you don't want to do a complete reinstall just make the new disk your primary and as long as your boot partition is relatively in the same place as the old one; windows should boot.

The just go about your merry way resizing and adding partitions.

If your new disk is faster than the old one you may beetter off using it for your OS.

Usual screwing with partitions health warnings apply !

You'll have problems moving your OS as is onto a new disk. It can be done using the likes of ghost but fails more often than not. I advise you to create a few partitions on your new disk first off - 1 one for windows OS, 1 for linux (you can re-partition it properly later, the linux way), and one or two large ones for your data (bearing in mind that linux prefers fat32 partitions for accessing windows data - NTFS is readable from linux, but NTFS writing in linux has been quite buggy in the past). Move your data across, then swap disks and re-install windows onto the new disk. When you have everything working happily, delete or do whatever you like with the old disk. Install linux sometime at your leisure after you install windows.

If you can get both HDs into the PC together you can copy the parytition, I have carried out this operation 2 months ago on my work laptop when installing a new primary HD.

You just need to ensure that windows is going to find the boot partition where it expects it on your new drive, i.e. if you are booting from Disk 1 Partition1 your copy should have the same structure, then it is just a case of swapping over the IDE cables.

yea trying to copy over the partion but after 92% done i get an error (122 to be exact!)

ill try it again and if it fails ill just copy over my data onto the new hard drive then reinstall the OS's on the other older hard drive.

Need to do it anyway so i might as well
