ITV satellite picture quality

For those of you who do not get ITV on satellite, and regularly slag off RTÉ you should read the numerous posts on Digital Spy complaining about the appalling picture quality of all ITV regions on Sky Digital. Having tried to watch Euro 2004 I gave up and went back to analogue terrestrial. Most people have been saying its unwatchable!

Why is it so bad? NTL's UTV is pretty good, aswell sa Chorus' carriage version (well, except for all those damn pixels!!!)

This is nothing new, back in Jan when I got my FTV card (after a struggle :D ),the biggest disappointment for me was the quality of the ITV channels. It turns out my analog aerial pointed at Brougher brings in as good if not better quality reception!!

The BBC's Euro 2004 picture quality tonight was also crap, ZDF Digital on Astra 19.2° had by far much more superiour picture quality without any pixels - despite the fact that the source cameras on BBC & ZDF were the very same.

    Lads

Unless my eyesight is very poor, I am getting an excellent picture on ITV through my Grundig Box,no issues.

I've a grundig box as well and apart from the picture breakup occasionally the picture quality on ITV is excellent.

I think the people mean they are not happy with occasional picture breakup and in this day and age who can blame them. I watched it but switched to ZDF after 10 mins and kept ITV commentary.

Shame about ITV but I dont think they care about viewers anymore and if anyone believe 20.4m watched the England game on itv then we are sad.

ITV = RUBBISH DIGITAL QUALITY = CHEAPSKATING ON BIT RATE.

I watch ITV1 Granada on two TV with no problems in quality.

Panasonic digibox connected to a 32" widescreen TV
Grundig digibox connected to a 14" portable TV

Are u saying that u have not noticed the picture break up during the footie transmissions!!!! If that is the case then I find that hard to believe, I have more than one digibox and it has happened on both. What happens is that the picture goes garbled for a few secs and it happens thoughout the game.

I watched the England - France game on ITV for the commentary (well you have to laugh) and didn't notice a single problem. I have not really watch the other games too closely but I will later and let ye know if I see any break ups.

I've no problems like that either .
I usually watch ITV meridien as thats where my cards are based or ITV wales.
No problems during that match either.
Maybe this depends on the size of the dish and your location?
Or perhaps any other dish/lnb issue.

Touch of Frost was intermittant. Occasional pixelation, jerks etc.

I assumed my dish / lnb had gone out of alingment, but BBC OK and PC satcard (dual LNB) OK too.

Maybe signal power is reduced on ITV transponder?

Maybe its the satellite feed from Portugal to the ITV Centre thats the problem!!! not the feed from ITV to you dish:confused:

I think the resolution is an issue with some ITV programmes and regions, and is made more noticable when watching in RGB as opposed to PAL on the digibox.

Speaking in general,I know this has nothing to do with pixellating but the standard of broadcast quality is not as good as other channels.

Watched both matches today on ARD (Das Erste) and ZDF at 19.2E. Can't fault the picture at all.

This is due to the BBC insisting on broadcasting the matches in a 16:9 widescreen frame, even though all the matches are 4:3 at the source. It means that a large portion of the data bandwith is used up in broadcasting the vertical black bars, while ZDF uses a 4:3 broadcast for a 4:3 source. (Which is very logical)
