During the Croatia v Switzerland game on BBC1 and now during the England v France game on UTV there are bars on the left and right of the screen, like its in 14:9 mode but it cant be gotten rid of by the tv. Its only on the digital servise and during the match, not before or after or at half time when they go to the studio. Anyone know what this is all about? Its not on the analogue so i have to watch it through that.

I remember the same problem on bbc with sky digital aswell.

On UTV its not even normal black bars but brown ones that seem to have been edited in for niceness.

For some reason only known to themselves the BBC (and now apparently ITV) like to present sport in widescreen even when the external source from the host broadcaster is 4:3. They do however have their pre and post match punditry in widescreen. Instead of switching between widescreen to 4:3 they transmit the whole lot in anamorphic widescreen and add (often coloured) bars on each side of the 4:3 picture to create the widescreen frame.
They have been doing it for several years now.
Truly bizarre, and annoying for everyone with both widescreen and 4:3 tvs.

does it create a double black bar effect on 4:3 tv's? (dont have a 4:3 tv in the house to check on)

it does if you have it set to anamorphic or letterbox widescreen, should be able to get simple 4:3 (with lower resolution due to zooming) if set to that.

Press "Menu", and then highlight "Screen Format", and press left to change it to "4:3 Pan & Scan". That should get rid of the bars for you during the match.

    Alternatively, watch on RTE...

Can't say I really mind the bars, although I usually watch on analog because there's about a second delay on the digital so I can hear my neighbours cheering before I see a goal happen !

its fixed now the 4:3 pan & scan set. Only problem now is the picture quality, ive had ntl for a couple of weeks now and am very dissappointed withthe quality of picture. I flicked between BBC1 on NTL, Analogue and Satallite. Through NTL digital it was by far the worst with Analogue 2nd and Satallite topping the list. The Pixelation on NTL is very bad its breaks up alot . This isbasically the same throughout all the channels. Is this a common thing or a problem on my end?
